The Cousin Nancy Show! or The Peep Show!

Since my last post, my podcast The Cousin Nancy Show, is now available to listen to on Apple, Spotify & Google, etc. and I am more than thrilled about this.

But I am even more thrilled about doing my first podcast, Season:1, Episode:1, with my dear friend Gerry Olert—last Saturday.

In my opinion, Gerry Olert is the Best Videographer & Editor in Texas. And if you recall Gerry, is the man who was the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranches official videographer and he was the editor of the Longmire—Texas Style spoof.

Anyway, a month before I had even made The Cousin Nancy Show trailer, he had volunteered to be my  very first guest (guinea pig) for my podcast. So, right now I would like to say, "Thank You, Gerry! You made doing the podcast so much fun."

Last Saturday, when Gerry arrived at Big Foot Ranch at 1:00—I had already set up the recording equipment, in the kitchen and I had been pacing the floor for an hour, because I was so nervous about doing the podcast and then editing it. Basically hoping that nothing would go wrong with the equipment, etc.

After howdies, Gerry and I spent about ten minutes discussing what we planned to talk about while Tony stood back and took this picture of us doing a sound check.

And a few minutes after T.'s photo shoot we adjusted our headphones and then I pushed the red record button on my computer and the audio interface lit up and we started talking.

Gerry and I chatted, told jokes, talked about our friends: Billy Joe Shaver, Kinky, Jay Pennington, Nancy Harvey, the owner of Spirits of Texas in Bandera, our dear friends at Escondida Resort & Spa, Big G, Asleep @ the Wheel, Chet O'Keefe, Jim Keaveny, the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, etc. ,jobs, etc. and I did so much laughing my back actually started aching.

One of my favorite subjects that we discussed and had fun with was when Gerry gave me a Peeps taste test. Even though I did not know anything about Peeps, he had brought with him 4 packages of different colored Peeps for me to taste.

And that is when we really did a lot of laughing. In fact, I think the subtitle for my first episode should have been The Peep Show, but you will have to listen to Episode:1 to decide for yourselves.

Gerry and I talked and laughed our way through my first podcast and we had recorded 59 minutes (998 megabytes). So, Sunday morning I spent a few hours editing the podcast down to 54 minutes before uploading it to Buzzsprout for them to rss feed to Apple, Google, Spotify and many other podcast platforms.

And as a teaser the first joke I told many of my friends are still laughing about it and telling it to their friends and families.

To listen to my first podcast you can go to cousinnancy.com and click the Podcast button at the top or at the bottom of the page and it will take you to The Cousin Nancy Show on Buzzsprout. Or you can just click this link: The Cousin Nancy Show or listen to it on Apple, Spotify or Google, etc.

As I finish writing this post/announcement, Sunday evening, Gerry sent me this cute photo that he took of his cat, sitting on top of his desk, watching the video he took of us talking about Peeps. (Gerry brought some of his video recording equipment and he had set it up to record the show, before he and I started talking.) Gerry titled his photo:
The Peep Show.

Hearts! or Cindys!

Today has been great. This morning I got up early so I could do the Big G show and talk about our rescue ranch. His Pet of the Week is Willie Nelson, a super-cool, sweet, four to five-year-old Lab Mix who's heart is full of LOVE to share.

While I was talking to Big G—Tony was outside doing his morning chores. He usually doesn't do them this early, but he had to, because he had  to report for jury duty and had to be, at the Kerr County Courthouse, by 8:45. So let's just say that he was not a happy camper this morning.

After Tony took off, in Trigger, I drank another cup of Donut Shop Coffee and was listening to JJ Cale's awesome music when my sweet sister Cindy called me. She wanted to know if I wanted to meet her, in Fredericksburg, for lunch today. And I told her that I would love to meet her for lunch, but I couldn't commit to it until I found out if Tony got dismissed from his jury duty. So that put us on hold until we knew one way or the other.

Originally, I had planned to mow today, but this morning when I told Tony of my plan to mow this morning, he more or less begged me not to, because he told me that he would be worried about me getting hurt and no one being here to help me. So he made me promise him that I would not mow until her got back to our rescue ranch. And I did with my fingers crossed, behind my back.

Pondering whether it would be more fun for me to see my sister or mow down our new, tall crop of weeds was not a hard decision for me to make. Seeing Cindy today was at the very top of my list for things for me to do today.

So, to pass the time while waiting to hear back from Tony I decided to get a head-start on my blogging for tonight. And right now it is 9:36 as I am typing this.

Last night I had also planned on blogging about my dear friend Cindy, in Northern New Mexico, but time simply got away from me. So I am going to do it now.

Cindy and her partner, Jody, a very talented New Mexico artist, have recently opened up this really beautiful Etsy shop called La Casa de Rosa (LACASADEROSA), and they are selling the most beautiful, hand-crafted hearts and altars that Jody has made. And the good news is—Jody's one-of-a-kind, lovely pieces of art are selling like hot cakes.

In fact, back in March, I ordered two of his pretty hearts, so I could give them as gifts to my friends, because they represent peace and love. And I love anything that is about peace and love. But of course, you already knew that.

Even though my intentions were good about giving these hearts away as gifts—I have to admit that I kept them instead. And I now have them hanging above and on opposite sides, of my kitchen sink, because they are my daily reminders that life is supposed to be about peace, love and harmony.

Anyway, last week I purchased two more of Jody's hearts, so that I could give them as gifts to my dear friends. And they arrived yesterday. And once again, I am very tempted to keep them for myself.

But I'm not going to keep these beautiful hearts, because I want to give Jody's lovely, hand-painted, hearts to two of my friends that are going through some very difficult times. In hopes of lifting their spirits while they deal with what's been dealt them.

Well, it is now 10:32, two minutes past Cindy's and my cut-off time, for wanting to meet for lunch, in Fred-town, and since Tony has not yet called me, I'm starting to suspect that he has been picked for jury duty.

So before I go call my sister Cindy to cancel our tentative lunch plans and then go outside to do some much-needed mowing, I hope that you will check out Cindy and Jody's beautiful Etsy store La Casa de Rosa.

Y'all have a great day and keep on laughing!

Love Copper Love!

Yesterday, Tony and I spent most of the day mowing and I am proud to say that our rescue ranch looks beautiful—until it rains again. : (

Last night Little Debbie, Big Al(ice) and me and the rest of our dogs watched the movie A Street Cat Named BobAnd How He Saved My Life by James Bowen and we absolutely loved it.

This fabulous movie is based on a true story and it is a feel-good, heart-warming movie that I highly recommend you watch. But don't be surprised when your dogs jump up and run, to the television screen, when they hear Bob meow or dogs barking.

Today has been great. This morning when I did the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch's segment, on Big G's show, sweet, eleven-year-old, Baxter Black was his Pet of the Week.

While Big G (Gordon Ames) and I were talking about Terlingua and West Texas I asked him if I could make an announcement about our dear friend, Copper Love, who was in a fatal car accident, on March 28th. "Sure Nancy. Go right ahead. Copper was a friend of mine."

And instead of telling you about Copper Love's Celebration of Life party—I am going to show you the invitation that was sent out about the event, which Tony and I will definitely be attending.

This morning I plan to do a little more mowing. Then take care of some rescue ranch paperwork and phone calls, etc. Then after I've cooked us lunch and cleaned up the kitchen—I plan to spend a few hours working on my pretty, patchwork quilt that so far is coming along nicely.

Y'all have a great day and keep on laughing!

Bad Girlz of Texas Monthly Wined Up! or Black Helicopters!

I am so glad that Tony and I went to the first Bad Girlz of Texas new Monthly Wined Up, in Kerrville, because we had such a great time.

When we got there, Sandy greeted us and said, "Y'all just missed seeing Kris & Jim. They just left." Then Jill Kinsey and Brigitte London started singing and those two extremely talented women gave me goose bumps, because their voices were so beautiful.

And by the time they had finished singing that song, they had drawn a huge crowd of people that had gathered up and down the sidewalk, just to listen to more of their incredibly great music.

Yesterday was just another hot Texas Summer day, so Sandy and I took off and went inside Bad Girlz of Texas, to cool off for a few minutes. This super cool store was packed with smiling customers, but when Andie, the owner, saw us she came right over and greeted us. "....Where's Tony?" she asked.

"He's next door visiting with Jon and he is probably sitting over there drooling at their new Texas Master Naturalist book they got in. Published by Texas A&M, which seriously that book must weigh at least ten pounds," I replied.

Sandy laughed, and then said, "It actually only weighs five pounds."

After we had a fun, but short visit with Andie, because she and Sadie were so busy ringing up the cash register or trying to help the customers, up walks our good friend Irene Van Winkle who is an extremely talented author whom I admire.

While the fabulous music was happening outside, Sandy and I had a fun visit with Irene. She told us about her upcoming trip to the Ukraine and then she and I caught up with each others latest news. Then Sandy walks up to us, and says, "Nancy, this hat is YOU! Try it on." So I tried on the pretty cowgirl hat, and Sandy says, "It looks great on you. You've got to buy it." And she was right about me needing to buy it.

After Irene left the building Sandy and I started doing some serious shopping, if that is even possible, because many of Andie's items are so unique and off-the-wall hilarious.

Ten minutes later, after paying for my stuff, Sandy and I went back outside to join the crowd listening to Brigitte London singing a Merle Haggard song with "Dash." (Daryl Wayne Dasher) So of course I got goose bumps again.

After their great performance they took a short break. And that's when Andie walked up to Irene and me and said, "I want to introduce you to these awesome musicians. They know Chet too and...."

When Andie introduced us to Brigitte London, she says, "Oh, I know you. You're Cousin Nancy! I've heard you on the radio. Big G's show....."

After a fun visit with all three of the musicians that are also good friends with Chet O'Keefe, I bought Jill's latest CD and Dash's latest CD and I would have bought Brigitt's CD too, but she had just sold completely out of all of her CDs, but Andie told me not to worry, because she was going to start selling all of their CDs, at both of her Bad Girlz of Texas locations, with all of the sales going straight to the musicians. And I liked that. Then I went next door to fetch Tony and to visit with The Wolfmuellers.

And before Tony and I adios-ed our dear friends, I surprised Tony, and said, "I want to buy that giant Texas Master Naturalist book, over there, as a present for Tony's upcoming birthday." Then I opened up my purse to get out a credit card, and I teased Tony, by saying, "Tony, I can't pick that thing up, because it is so heavy, so if you want me to buy it for you, you'll need to haul it over here to the counter for me." And Tony jumped at my request, which made all of us laugh.

When Tony and I got back home we put up our groceries and then I took these pictures of my latest Bad Girlz of Texas merchandise: the cute cowgirl hat, the CDs and the pretty pink doggie treats jar that I later filled up with our dog's treats.

And as I finish writing this for tonight, I just snapped this cute picture of sweet Belle doing some serious sleeping, on the needs-to-be-repainted-soon rug. And just so you will know—she is Henry Standing Bear's best friend.

Right after I took Belle's picture we had two, big, fast moving, black helicopters fly over the ranch. I wasn't fast enough to get outside to take a picture of the first one, but here is a picture that I took of the second black helicopter flying over us, that rattled everything inside our trailer including all of our nerves. Here's a picture of it and then I cropped it down, so I could enlarge the picture of the solid black copter.

Then I went back and cropped off some more to get this close up picture of it.

And I wonder what's that long thing sticking out, in front of the body of the helicopter? Anyway, that's my latest Breaking News for today coming live from the rescue ranch.

Y'all have a great evening and keep on laughing.

Old Friends And New Friends! or The Ranch Rocks!

Today has been great. This morning, as planned, James & Vivi, from Paris, Texas, came out to visit and see our rescue ranch, because to visit our rescue ranch has been on their Bucket List for several years.

I instantly liked this super nice, friendly couple when they arrived. Tony wasn't here when they arrived, because he was up at the Medina Highpoint Resort taking pictures of beautiful vintage cars that had come to a rally there. Some of his pictures included a '65 Ford Mustang, '55 Ford, T.-Bird, '60's Jeepster, etc.

I gave our new friends, from Paris, a tour of our rescue ranch and introduced them to all of our super dogs. And they especially liked our sweet, adorable Katee Sackhoff.

Tony arrived right after I had given them a grand tour and like me he instantly liked them, too. While he was visiting with them outside, I  came inside and called Kinky to ask him if I could bring them over to meet him. "Sure Nance, bring them over. They can meet Marcie and Big G, too."

We had a really fun visit with Kinky, Marcie and Big G and while we were there Big G was playing some really great blues using Kinky's guitar. I said, "Omg, Big G! I didn't know that you played the guitar. How long have you been playing?"

"For over fifty years," he replied, followed by a chuckle.

"Wow, me too. I am so glad that you're here, because it reminded me to tell you that tomorrow morning I'm going out to Terlingua with my sister Cindy, my brother Ronnie and his wife Nita. so I won't be doing your show. Tony is going to have to do the Utopia segment Tuesday morning and he's kind of nervous about it."

"Great," Big G said. "Now, tell Tony not to be nervous..."

After our fun visit, we came back over to the rescue ranch, because James & Vivi needed to get back on the road, because they were going to drive to Boerne to shop and eat lunch, before driving back to Llano where they are staying. And before they drove away they told us that they were going to do some serious thinking about possibly adopting Katee.

Now about last night. I had a blast binge-watching a new series on Netflix and I hardly ever quit laughing. Seriously, it was so funny my back started aching, because I was laughing so hard. The name of the adult, sitcom series is The Ranch. Starring Sam Elliott, Debra Winger and Ashton Kutcher. And Don Reo is a co-creator of this Netflix comedy.

Our friend Don Reo is also a good friend of Kinky's. In fact, we met him, because of Kinky. Don is the nicest man and he is one of the best American television writers and producers. Several years ago he and Judith, his sweet wife, came out to visit all of us, on a couple of times, and they love our rescue ranch and they support our efforts.

Don is also famous for creating some of the best television shows such as: Blossom, The John Larroquette Show for NBC and My Wife and Kids for ABC. And he has written for Everybody Hates Chris, M*A*S*H, Rhoda and The Golden Girls, too. He was also the executive producer and the main writer for the FOX show Action and he was an executive producer and show runner on Two And A Half Men.

Anyway, I want to highly recommend that you watch The Ranch sitcom on Netflix, because I promise that it will keep you laughing. Click here to watch The Ranch official trailer.

Y'all have a great evening!

A Light Bulb Moment!

Today has been great. This morning, after drinking my second, delicious cup of Donut Shop coffee, I talked on the phone for nearly two hours.

Generally, I don't enjoy talking on the phone at all and anything longer than ten minutes is just too much. But this time it was fun, because our friend, Mary Lou Sullivan, was interviewing/recording me for her upcoming authorized, official autobiography of Kinky.

After the interview, Tony and I took off, for Kerrville, to eat lunch and then run a few errands. By the time we got to Kerrville, Tony and I had decided to eat lunch at Buzzi's Barbecue. And when we pulled into the parking lot, which was nearly full, we spotted Big G's giant pickup parked near the front of the restaurant. But when we walked inside we didn't see Big G anywhere.

When we were leaving the restaurant, Tony saw Big G, standing outside, talking to a couple, in the parking lot. So we went outside to say hello to our good friend. After howdies, hugs and handshakes Big G told me that yesterday Jim Keaveny had dropped by the radio station and had dropped off some of his music CDs to listen to, but unfortunately Big G had missed seeing Jim & Anna, because he was at an appointment. "Keaveny's music is really great...." Big G said.

After our fun visit with Big G (Gordon Ames) we went to the Home Depot to pick up one more 4-bulb pack of Ecosmart LED Soft White light bulbs, because a few days earlier we had purchased three 4-packs and had replaced twelve of our old light bulbs with these non-mercury, awesome, money saving bulbs that estimates the energy cost to be only $1.08 per year and it only uses 9 watts. And just one bulb will save us $140.00 in lifetime energy savings.

When I had read the package, I joked to Tony, "How can they promise $140.00 in lifetime energy savings when they don't know how long we will live?"

I know that we are probably the last people, on Earth, who have not switched over to using LED bulbs, but we didn't know about it until Tony had watched a YouTube video about them.

So, as I finish writing this tonight, I am very excited about saving so much money. Because I just calculated how much money it will cost us using our 16 LED bulbs for one year @ $1.08 cost per  year and it will only cost us $17.28 if we keep them all turned on and we never turn them off. Now that's a light bulb moment.

Y'all have a great evening!

Steven Rambam!

The New Year is already starting out great. Garnet sent me a note about Bobby & Ginger (The sweet Boxer that he adopted from us the day after Christmas.) She wrote that Bobby loves Ginger as much as she loves him and things are working out great.

Earlier this morning Tony told me that our dear friend Fay, up in Toronto, wants to adopt the female Pyr-mix pup if I am sure about not wanting to adopt Sassy aka Grandma for myself. "Tony, we already have five dogs and seriously, these precious puppies have been wearing both of us out.... So please tell Fay that we would love for her & Ian to adopt Sassy from us."

Then I spoke, on the phone, with two other nice people about two more upcoming possible adoptions. The woman and husband from Bandera are going to come out Monday to possibly adopt Rockette and I might also be driving and delivering one of our older dogs out to Alpine to be fostered! So please keep your fingers crossed about all of these adoptions.

And a few minutes ago, I received this e-mail from our good friend Rambam, with an exciting announcement. So, to help him kick-start and generate a audience, I copied it and am posting it here. Rambam wrote:

"Dear Colleagues:

This coming Wednesday (06 January 2016), 2:00 PM CT, is the launch of "Justice Radio", an exciting new radio show focusing on investigations, security issues, law enforcement, the justice and legal systems, and related issues of all kinds.

I am thrilled to announce that I have been selected as the host of Justice Radio, and will be partnering with Gordon "Big G" Ames of the famous Texas Roadshow.

Justice Radio is a weekly multi-platform broadcast, and will air every Wednesday, 2-3 PM Central Time. It airs in the most prime of prime times: we're sandwiched between Rush Limbaugh and then Herman Cain and Mark Levin.

If you are in Central Texas you can listen on 1230 AM, and on FM, too. (Not certain of the complete broadcast area / channels, but for certain it's available in the entire Hill Country, and in some or all of San Antonio.) Justice Radio will also be live-streamed worldwide on the Internet (www.kerv1230.com) and is available live via all Apple and Android phones. (I've C&P a link to the iOS app, below.) J.R. will also be available as a free podcast on iTunes. Meaning, there is no location, worldwide, where Justice Radio will not be available, both live and podcast.

Justice Radio is also listener-participation radio; most shows, including the kickoff, will have an active call-in line. (Yes, we welcome your participation, and yes, please feel free to suggest guests.)

It is my hope that I will now be able to do on radio what I have been accomplishing on TV (I hope that you agree): to demonstrate how private investigation is today not just a job, it is a profession, and private investigators are a critical - in fact irreplaceable - part of the justice and legal system. (A note to FOI members: yes, J.R. will help FOI's educational and outreach programs grow!)

And based on what we're already been able to line up, Justice Radio is going to be one of the most entertaining and informative shows, anywhere. Scheduled this month:

06 January  KICKOFF

13 January "We See Dead People"
(murder for hire, fraudulent deaths and international investigation)
Guests:  Elizabeth Greenwood, author of "Playing Dead"
Richard Marquez, international death claim investigator

20 January "No Ferrari"

Fictional Private Investigators vs. the reality of modern private investigation

Guest: Richard "Kinky" Friedman, author of 20 private detective novels

27 January "Privacy Is Dead, Get Over It"

Privacy, Electronic Surveillance, The Internet of Things and tracking 24-7-265

03 February "International Investigation and Due Diligence"

Guests TBA; co-broadcast from international location

All input will be gratefully accepted,

Steven."

And that's what is going on out here right now.

Y'all have a great day!

Her Turn To Vent!

Today has been great. I got up this morning, at 6:15, so I could be wide awake to do Big G's radio show, around 7:20.  As I drank my first cup of delicious Donut Shop coffee I looked outside. It was still dark.

The indoor/outdoor thermometer, above the kitchen sink, showed that it was 43 degrees outside and the inside temperature was 63 degrees, because we hadn't turned on the central heat. So I put on my navy blue sweatshirt to help keep me warm and then I said goodbye to Tony, as he left to go drink coffee with his friends, at the famous Old Timer, in Medina.

I had fun doing the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch segment with Big G. After I had told him about Bonnie Raitt, a beautiful, sweet Lab mix, being his Pet of the Week and that she was approximately two-years-old and was a super dog we changed the subject.

We started talking about the weather and the recent rain that we got last Saturday. Which led us to the reason why me and my brother and sister have a huge fear of thunder and lightning storms.

"Big G, my mother was a twin and when she was only five or six-years-old, she was with her family, standing on a corner, in downtown Fort Worth. When this big 18-wheeler truck struck her and dragged her two blocks down Main Street. The doctors had to put this metal plate in her head and she and her identical twin sister had to miss an entire year of school, because of that. And when the doctors finally released my mom, from the hospital, they warned my grandparents that my mom was like a walking lighting rod, so they were to always keep her safe indoors during all electrical storms...."

A little while later, after Tony had returned home, I checked the indoor/outdoor thermometer again. It had risen to 48 degrees outside and 64 degrees inside, so I turned on the heater for the very first time this Fall.

Then I watched Little Debbie run across the big room, over to the kitchen vent, so she could vent, next to Roy.

And moments later, Belle joined them.

Then Big Al(ice) showed up.

About five minutes after that, Beau was outside and he started barking at squirrel, so Roy and Belle immediately got up and raced to the front door and let themselves go outside. Leaving just Little Debbie and Al(ice).

Then when Tony walked back into the kitchen to make a cup of coffee, Little Debbie took off to go greet him. And Big Al(ice) didn't seem to mind at all, because I guess she thought it was finally her turn to vent. Before Tony and I went outside to do the morning chores. And the funny thing about it when we went outside—it was warmer outside than it was inside The Cabin.

Y'all have a great evening!

Fay From Toronto! or Big G From Kerrville!

Yesterday and today have been great. Last night our dear friend Fay called me, from Toronto. Fay, from Toronto, is our long time, dear friend. She and her beautiful family over the years have adopted three dogs from us: Kris Kristofferson, Kia and Blake Shelton.

Anyway, she called me last night, because she and her sweet husband Ian were, at Hugh's Room, visiting with Kinky, Brian Molnar and Joe Cirotti, before Kinky, Brian and Joe performed to a standing room only crowd. And Fay sent me these four pictures .

Fay & Kinky

Kinky & Joe

When Fay called me she told me that the crowd loves Kinky and that he was being kept busy autographing his new Cd, The Loneliest Man I Ever Met, that Brian produced. Before handing the phone over to Kinky, she also told me that she and Ian were having a blast.

I had a fun, but rather short visit with Kinky before someone, in the crowd, asked him to please sign his Cd for them. Kinky told me that he is really enjoying his tour with Brian and Joe. He is badly missing all of The Friedmans, especially Sophia and he hopes that we get a lot of rain, in the next few days.

This morning I did some more work on, the Mother Ship, my old, 1993 Shasta RV. Then around 1:00 Tony and I went to Kerrville to buy more dog food for our rescued dogs and then run a few errands. And the best part of our trip to Kerrville was getting to visit with Marguerite, at the Wild Birds Unlimited store.

And before I go back outside to work on my RV, I want to wish our dear friend Big G a Happy Birthday.

Y'all have a great evening!

Malcolm Not In The Middle!

Today has been great and last night's post was way too long, but I wanted to catch y'all up. This morning was a busy one and this afternoon was so much fun.

I got up real early this morning and did paperwork, cleaned the trailer, washed a load of clothes, before Big G called me, at 7:20, to do my Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch segment. And Big G's, Jay Pennington's, Kinky's, Tony's and my friend, Malcolm Holt, visiting us from England, was in the studio and he did the show with Big G.

Gordon Ames' Pet Of The Week was Hazel. She's a lovely, four-year-old Shepherd mix patiently waiting for her forever family to show up and adopt her. So please come out here soon, because she is starting to think that I've been lying to her when I tell her everyday, "Hang in there, girlfriend. You're going to get adopted sooner than later. I promise."

After the fun radio segment with the men, I cooked two complete dinners and froze them, while doing paperwork, returning e-mails, etc. And the reason that I cooked two complete meals to serve four people, is because I am fixin' to go on a road trip aka mini-vacation with Chet O'Keefe. And he and I leaving early Saturday morning, to attend An Imagica/Rites Of Passage Film Premier, in Taos, New Mexico, Sunday night.

I was planning to go, so I could help my dear friend, Cindy Pickard, with the event and Tony wanted me to go to it too, but he was a little concerned about me driving out there all by myself.

Last week, when Chet returned from his trip, I was telling him about going to Cindy's film premier, in New Mexico and then he tells me that he is going to the film premier, too, because Cindy and Andy had used one of his songs, in their awesome documentary, and she had already asked him, when he went to visit her last week, to please come back for it, so she could introduce him and he could play some of his awesome music. So, we immediately decided to drive out there together and that made Tony and me real happy.

This afternoon around 2:00, our good friends Malcolm Holt and Jay Pennington came out to visit Kinky, Tony and me. Malcolm, Jay, Tony and I had a fun visit, in The Cabin and then all of us went over to see Kinky.

Our fun visit started out, on Kinky's front porch. Then Kinky invited us to come inside, because he wanted us to listen to his new, soon-to-be released CD, in early October. Even though Tony and I have heard it several times, we still enjoyed listening to it, because it is our favorite Kinky CD.

Before we adios-ed Kinky, Kinky autographed Jay's three copies of Sam Kindrick's Action Magazine that was about the magazine's Fabulous, 40th Anniversary Party, at Texas Pride BBQ, because the celebration had raised $10,000 to benefit our rescue ranch. And Jay gave us one of the signed copies, so we can get it framed, too.

Then we went outside to take a few pictures. And I was so glad that I was wearing my Sasquatch 2014 Research Team t-shirt and had brought along my Area 51 license plate to show to Kinky, because Kinky loved my Area 51 sign and he held it when Tony shot us. From left to right: Malcolm Holt, Kinky, me and Jay Pennington.

And after Tony had put away his camera, I joked, "Darn it! We should have put Malcolm in the middle." And that's about it for tonight, because I need to start packing a few things.

Y'all have a great evening!

Thomas Evans!

Today has been great. First off, I want to wish Jim "The Mineral Man" a happy birthday. This morning when I called in and did the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch segment, with Big G, I wished Jim a happy birthday on-air and then Big G asked me to sing the Happy Birthday song to our good friend.

After I quit laughing at his request, I said, "Big G, I can't sing it. I'm tone deaf. Why don't you sing Happy Birthday to Jim?"

After Big G quit laughing at my request, he said, "I only sing Happy Birthday to you and Ruth Buzzi. Come on Cousin Nancy. Sing the song." Because I really can't sing worth a dang, I ended up sort of singing the birthday song really, really fast.

Big G's Pet of the Week was Bee Spears and after we talked about Bee being nine-years-old and really sweet, Big G asked me, "What is Chet O'Keefe's contraption that I saw on Tony's Facebook page?" After I told him that Chet had made the Chet Pack, a backpack with a small amp attached to it, so he can walk around and play music, Big G thought that it was a really cool thing to do. Then I changed the subject.

"Big G, did you know that there is going to be a great art opening and reception for Steve Pietzsch's Austin friend, from Austin? His name is Thomas Evans."

"No, I didn't. When is it and where?"

"This Thursday afternoon/evening from 4:30 to 6:30, at the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center, across the street from Wolfmueller's Books. Tom Evans has a really big show of his great Texas landscapes and our friend Donna Hatch has written an upcoming article about him that will appear in The Kerrville Daily Times, Thursday edition. Steve, Chet, Tony and I will be there, as will Donna and Ryan Hatch. And it would be great if you could make it, too. You can check out Thomas Evans art on his website to check out his beautiful art."

"I will and I'll probably see y'all there..."

Late this afternoon Tony and I went to Kerrville to run several errands and our first stop was at Wolfmueller's Books. After we found the books that we were looking for we had a fun visit with Sandy and Jon. But it was s short, fun visit, because Sandy and Jon were busy helping their customers find books, etc."

Our last stop, before coming back to the ranch was at Wild Birds Unlimited, another one of our favorite stores, because it too, always has such great vibes. When we walked inside the store Linda greeted us and then said, "I'm sorry, but you just missed Marguerite. She left here about ten minutes ago. Can I help y'all find anything?"

As she talked to Tony about some birdseed I browsed around the store looking at all of their new inventory and their 50% Off display. When I was admiring this beautiful, tall, shingled A-framed birdhouse, near the front door, Linda laughed loudly and said, "I think that's Marguerite's mini-van that just pulled up."

I looked out the front window and when I saw Marguerite get out of her vehicle, I joked, "It is. Let me handle this." When our good friend walked inside the store, I said, "Welcome to Wild Birds Unlimited. I'm Nancy. May I help you?"

It took Marguerite a second or two, because I had caught her totally off guard and then she started laughing with us. Then the four of us had a really fun visit. Marguerite and I had fun trading hilarious Chihuahua stories about Mini-Marguerite, Little Debbie and Alice, while Linda helped Tony pick out certain birdseed that would attract certain birds that he has been wanting to photograph.

When it was time for Linda to ring us up, the cash register started acting up and it would not let Linda enter the code for a certain sack of birdseed. We got to laughing about it and then Linda gave up trying and asked Marguerite to please ring it up on the other cash register. "It's probably happening," I said, "because the full moon is in a couple of days, on the 5th."

As Marguerite started putting in the codes again, she laughed and joked, "No, I think it's because of Nancy's crazy vibes." Then she looked at the cash register and said, "This one won't take the code either." So we all burst out laughing again.

I looked over at Tony and shot him a wink and jokingly said, "Tony, we love this store, but they won't let us buy anything. What are we going to do?" Then Marguerite, Linda and me started making jokes and laughing even harder, when this nice man walked into Linda and Kevin Pillow's Wild Birds Unlimited store. And I would bet you that when he saw us laughing and giggling, at the counter, he probably thought that we were a bunch of crazy ladies that Tony had been assigned to chaperon.

Anyway as always, we had a great time at Wild Birds Unlimited. And I guess, because of the nice man's vibes their cash register started working immediately and it let us pay for our birdseed. And that is about it for tonight.

Y'all have a great evening!

2.57 carat diamond to be sold as fundraiser for animal sanctuary

MEDINA — Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch has a special way to ring in the New Year — with a 2.57-carat diamond ring valued at nearly $20,000 retail.
The sparkling gem is a gift to the ranch from Brownsville resident Linda Forse, an animal lover-rescuer and supporter of the nonprofit, no-kill animal sanctuary. The ring will be sold through Fitch Estate Sales to raise funds for the ranch.
Offers will be accepted through midnight Dec. 31 and will be sold to the highest offer.
A reserve price of $7,500 has been set.
“I’ve been to the ranch a few times, and I’ve made donations over the years, but I want to make a real a difference, and the dollar value of the ring will be, hopefully, enough to see the ranch through hard times,” said Forse, who rescues greyhounds. “Cousin Nancy and Tony are so dedicated and two of the nicest people you’d ever meet. What they do for the animals is what we all should be doing for humanity: Good hearts in the right places.”
Cousin Nancy and Tony are Nancy Parker-Simons and her husband, Tony Simons, who founded Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch with their longtime friend, Kinky Friedman, in 1998.
The five-acre sanctuary is tucked inside the 365-acre Echo Hill Ranch in Medina that has been in the Friedman family for more than 60 years.
Throughout the years, the rescue ranch has provided sanctuary to thousands of animals, including dogs, cats, pigs, goats, horses, donkeys and turkeys — many of which would have been forgotten and euthanized. They’ve also found loving homes for countless animals.
Friedman said the ring was unexpected and “very much appreciated.”
Proceeds will be used to fund ongoing veterinary care and feed the animals.
“Cousin Nancy and Tony will be fed, too,” Friedman quipped. “Those two are our only staff, and they are paid a very nominal salary. Cousin Nancy and Tony have devoted their lives to this peaceful kingdom and happy orphanage, and Utopia couldn’t exist without them. Everybody else who helps out are probably the best set of volunteers in the world, along with the Salvation Army, which may be the greatest army in the world.”
Parker-Simons said the ranch spends about $400 a month on dog food, “and our veterinary care, even with big discounts, fluctuates from month to month, because every dog that we rescue gets spayed or neutered, given all shots and treated for any ailments.”
Last month, Parker-Simons received a call about a young female Labrador without tags that had limped onto the caller’s property.
“He thought the dog had been hit by a car, because she didn’t walk right. He said he could not afford to keep her, because he is losing his battle with cancer,” she said. “The story pulled at my heartstrings.”
The injured animal, which Parker-Simons had dubbed Bonnie Raitt, was taken to Hoegemeyer Animal Clinic, which works with the rescue ranch to provide affordable veterinary care.
“The next morning, a vet from the clinic told me that Bonnie had a fractured pelvis and she needed surgery on both hips. In addition, both of her back legs had torn ACL’s needing surgery, too — and the surgeries would cost in the thousands of dollars.”
With limited funds, Parker-Simons arranged to pay the fee over time.
“Bonnie has had her first side done, and the surgery was successful on her hip and ACL.”
The dog will recuperate for another month or so and then have the additional surgery.
“Bonnie Raitt’s rescue is the most expensive dog rescue that we’ve had in over 16 years of rescuing animals,” Parker-Simons said. “Every time that we rescue a dog, we seldom know in advance what the veterinary cost will be, so we are very grateful that this beautiful ring has been donated to us, because it will certainly help us pay the bills, continue rescuing and help us try to leave the world a better place than we found it.”

About the ring
The ring was purchased in November 1965 by Forse’s grandfather, David Forse, for his wife, Francis. In its original setting, the ring held a 2.57 carat diamond and an equally large sapphire.
“My grandparents spent winters in Miami Beach, and Pop was in a jewelry store, and he wanted to buy something for his and Mimi’s 50th anniversary,” Forse said. “As the story goes, Sammy Davis Jr. was also in the store at the time, and he wanted to buy the same ring for his wife, May Britt, a Swedish movie star, because it was their fifth anniversary. Pop and Sammy Davis each said they saw the ring first, so there was some back-and-forth. The jeweler intervened and decided that 50 years trumps five years, and Pop got it. He always playfully boasted about how he bested Sammy Davis Jr.”
Francis Forse died in 1995, and the ring has been in her granddaughter’s possession since that time.
Rachel Fitch, an antique appraiser and owner of Fitch Estate Sales, 838 Sidney Baker St., said the sapphire had been scratched and damaged over time, “but the diamond is simply gorgeous. It’s a modified shield cut diamond and is a very unusual. Everybody either gets a round diamond or an emerald-cut diamond.”
Fitch removed the diamond from the original setting — which “though lovely, was antiquated” — and sent the diamond off to be GIA-certified.
“It came back as a 2.57 carat, L color, VS1, which is the clarity of the diamond. VS1 is a really great clarity,” Fitch said. “The diamond has really very good symmetry. Everything you want it to have, it has.”
Fitch is handling the sale of the ring as a holiday gift to Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, she said.
“We’re taking written offers, and anyone who wants to see the ring in welcome to come into the store.”
A current offer of $7,500 is on the table.
Fitch said she has put the ring is a simple setting — which really sets off the beauty of the gem.
“The average woman wears 1 carat or less, and this is a 2.57 carat diamond,” Fitch said. “The solitaire diamond, which is so big and looks even bigger in a simple setting, makes it a very unusual engagement ring,” Fitch said. “If you were to go to a big box jewelry store, they would have this ring at $19,000 or $20,000, because that’s what retail is. But the sale of this particular ring is for a good cause — all the proceeds benefit animal rescue — so whoever purchases this particular ring is getting so much more in the bargain. And did I mention it’s tax deductible?”
The fact that it’s a shield cut diamond — which looks like a Super Man shield — is the perfect way to say “You are the protector of my heart,” Fitch said. “If you factor in that the basis for selling the ring in the first place is to help protect animals, the ring is even more beautiful than its combined cut, clarity and carats. This is a very special ring, and whoever gets it will be getting a remarkable deal.”
Forse said her grandmother would be pleased.
“I have no doubt that my grandmother, who was an animal lover, would love that this is going to a good cause,” Forse said. “It’s absolutely the right thing to do. I’m sure I’ll have a dream one night, and Mimi will come to me and say ‘Good job, Linda.’

Above: Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch recently acquired Bonnie Raitt, a stray Labrador pup that was seriously injured. Proceeds from the sale ofthe ring will be used for the dog’s surgery expenses, as well as to fund other needs at the no-kill animal sanctuary.

Francis by her husband in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary has been donated by their granddaughter, Linda Forse, to Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch.

Sammy Davis Jr. wed Swedish actress Britt May in November1960. Five years later, he visited a Miami Beach jeweler in search of an anniversary ring for his wife. The diamond from that ring has been donated to Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch and will be sold to the highest offer.

HUNT — The inimitable Kinky Friedman headlines a cavalcade of music, humor, poetry and more at a New Year’s Eve extravaganza at The Hunt Store, 1634 Texas 39.
Joining Friedman on stage are singer-songwriter Chet O’Keefe, Texas outlaw poet Sean Rima and Friedman’s longtime friend Jeff Shelby, aka Little Jewford, an accomplished concert pianist and comedian who has been described as “a Liberace and Victor Borge cocktail, with a twist of the Marx Brothers”
Radio host Gordon “Big G” Ames of radio station KERV-AM 1230 — who is nominated for a 2015 Ameripolitan Music Awards DJ of the Year award — serves as the evening’s host.
“It’s my job to keep these idiots in line,” Ames joked.
The dinner concert, which is from 6 to 9:30 p.m., includes a buffet created especially for the event by The Hunt Store’s Chef Blas Gonzales, formerly of the Antler Grill.
The menu includes hors d’oeuvres, such as chicken-fried axis tenders and chicken empanadas, wild game, beef, fish and poultry served with starches, vegetables and desserts.
The dinner show will be followed by a late show on the patio featuring entertainment by Josh Murley and Someone Like You — which includes drummer-keyboardist Patrick McCorkindale and bassist Mark Auld — from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on the patio and includes a champagne toast and midnight brunch by Chef Blas.
“The format for the night is to offer an early dinner show for those that want a nice dinner and entertainment, but may want to be home early and a Late show for those that want to party through midnight and ring in new year with a bang,” said John Dunn, owner of The Hunt Store.
Tickets to the dinner show plus late show are $100 per person. Tickets to the late show-only are $35 per person, Dunn said.

A night of stars
Friedman, who has been called “the Frank Zappa of country music,” is renowned for his satirical country songs. His latest CD, titled “Bi-Polar Tour Live From Woodstock,” kicked off his Bi-Polar World Tour, with dates throughout Scandinavia, England, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium/Holland, Austria and Switzerland.
“I’ll singing, schmoosing and will sign anything except bad legislation,” said Friedman, a best-selling author, humorist, cigar and tequila mogul, sometime politico and animal rescuer. “We’ll have all kinds of things to sign: CDs, books, you name it, including the 997th reprint of ‘Heroes of a Texas Childhood’ with an new cover illustrated by the artist Copper Love — a Hill Country sky with a comet, which is just lovely.
“Little Jewford — who’s a Jew and owns a Ford — will do his piano stylings of Scott Joplin’s ‘Maple Leaf Rag,’ and he does it as good as anybody since Scott Joplin, another Texan, and that’s been a while,” Friedman said. “The entertainment will be at least as good as the food, and that will be fantastic.”
Originally from the Northwest, O’Keefe — who won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Song of the Year Award in 2010 — will combine a bit of storytelling with a mix of his brand of acoustic folk, western and jazzy-bluesy music.
O’Keefe spent nine years in Nashville, followed by a short stint in Dallas, and lived for three years in Northern Washington. He has performed with the legendary Bo Diddley, has opened for Nancy Griffith on her tour in Ireland and has toured several times with Friedman.
“Kinky and I have performed together in the past — I’d do my opening set, and he’d do his performance — and it’s always been a lot of fun,” O’Keefe said. “I’ll do some of my old stuff and some new songs — all songs that fit the occasion and are celebratory in nature. I’ve performed once with Little Jewford, and he’s seriously funny. He’s a brilliant pianist, and he tells jokes and does song parodies that are just hysterical. I’ve never performed with Sean, but we hang out a lot, and I know his work, which is not to be missed.”
Rima, a cosmic philosopher and San Antonio-based talk show host, said he’s written a special poem for the evening.
“I’m keeping my theme to the holidays and New Year’s. I try to go funny first and philosophy second,” said Rima, whose “Wild West Show: Selected Poems” is a funny, gritty collection of poems spanning the years 2001-14. “Usually, there’s a few laughs with my poems, but I’m editing the set, so it’s more of a PG-rating of my work. I’m really looking forward to the event.”
Rima said he and Friedman met and became friends through their shared love of writing — and the provocative and politically incorrect satirist has become fodder for Rima’s poems.
“He’s such an interesting dude. I’ve written a whole series of poems about what it’s like hanging out with him, and I’ll probably read a few of those,” Rima said.
“Kinky’s idea for the New Year’s eve concert is just a flowing evening of entertainment, and that’s what it will be — just a whole lotta fun and laughs. How can anything be better than that?”

Singer-songwriter Chet O’Keefe, who has toured with humorist and country music singer Kinky Friedman throughout Sweden and Norway, joins him on stage New Year’s Eve at The Hunt Store.

Jeff Shelby, aka Little Jewford, is an accomplished concert pianist and comedian who performs everything from piano rags, classical favorites, all delivered with wit and quips.
