Love Copper Love!

Yesterday, Tony and I spent most of the day mowing and I am proud to say that our rescue ranch looks beautiful—until it rains again. : (

Last night Little Debbie, Big Al(ice) and me and the rest of our dogs watched the movie A Street Cat Named BobAnd How He Saved My Life by James Bowen and we absolutely loved it.

This fabulous movie is based on a true story and it is a feel-good, heart-warming movie that I highly recommend you watch. But don't be surprised when your dogs jump up and run, to the television screen, when they hear Bob meow or dogs barking.

Today has been great. This morning when I did the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch's segment, on Big G's show, sweet, eleven-year-old, Baxter Black was his Pet of the Week.

While Big G (Gordon Ames) and I were talking about Terlingua and West Texas I asked him if I could make an announcement about our dear friend, Copper Love, who was in a fatal car accident, on March 28th. "Sure Nancy. Go right ahead. Copper was a friend of mine."

And instead of telling you about Copper Love's Celebration of Life party—I am going to show you the invitation that was sent out about the event, which Tony and I will definitely be attending.

This morning I plan to do a little more mowing. Then take care of some rescue ranch paperwork and phone calls, etc. Then after I've cooked us lunch and cleaned up the kitchen—I plan to spend a few hours working on my pretty, patchwork quilt that so far is coming along nicely.

Y'all have a great day and keep on laughing!

Good Bye Ruby Tuesday

Yesterday afternoon Kinky called to tell me some horribly sad news that our dear friend Copper Love was in a fatal car accident around noon. So tonight, to honor our sweet friend. I am dedicating this, in loving memory to Copper Love.

Everyone who knew Copper loved her for so many different reasons. And all of us knew how lucky we were to be her friend. She was honest, sincere and she always wore a big smile on her face. Copper was always upbeat and funny. And she was a very famous artist respected and known worldwide.

Copper loved all animals and they loved her right back, because she had a very special connection with them—they trusted her.

In fact, Copper came out to our rescue ranch on numerous occasions to work with our dogs that had social problems and she fixed everyone of them. And over the nineteen years that our Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch has existed—Copper only adopted her dogs from our rescue ranch.

Copper was good friends with the Rolling Stones and she hung out with them and that is why her Mazda's custom license plates were code for: Ruby Tuesday.

Copper's many interesting and fascinating tales, about her life were often hilarious or outrageous and if you were one of the lucky ones to ever hear her tell a story—it was something that you would never forget.

There is so much more to tell about how great Copper Love was and how she touched so many hearts, around the world, during her lifetime. She was truly an inspiration to me and to so many others, because she always listened to her heart and she always followed her dreams. Or better said—Copper Lived!

Copper & Clovis! or Like A Rolling Stone!

Today has been one of those busy days where Tony and I didn't know if we were coming or going, but the bottom line is that today has been more than great, because Copper has officially adopted Clovis and she is more than thrilled about it. In fact, she is totally in love with him.

Earlier this evening Copper called to tell me that she thinks Clovis is the coolest, smartest dog and she raved and raved about how perfect a match he is for her. And I had to totally agree with her, because Clovis is definitely a super dog. And we are so happy that Copper & Clovis have found each other.

If you didn't already know this about our good friend, Copper Love, she is a famous artist and her beautiful paintings have been sold all over the world. So I was thrilled when she told me that she'll be taking Clovis everywhere that she goes to work on her paintings—like Terlingua, Texas and the Big Bend area, Texas Hill Country, etc.

Now Copper Love didn't tell me this, but I know that Clovis will soon become a big time Rolling Stones fan, like she is, because Copper actually knows them, because she used to travel and hang out with them, when they were on their world tours. So I'm sure that Clovis is going to have so much fun traveling with Copper and becoming like a rolling stone with her, because Clovis is officially now Copper's new best friend!

And that's about it for tonight, because I am pooped and need to unwind tonight and watch some TV, because I already know that tomorrow is going to be another busy day for Tony and me.

Y'all have a great evening and keep on laughing!

Happy Birthday Dylan Ferrero! In Dog Years He's Not That Old!

Early Saturday morning, after breakfast, Tony and I went over to the Lodge to drink a cup of coffee with Kinky. We talked about Thunder and her passing and Kinky's kind words about her made me smile. Then we talked about The Friedmans giving up dog bones for their New Year's resolution and Chumley being so happy to be back home since his observation stay at Hoegemeyers. "Is Maude coming home today?" Kinky asked.

"I think so, but I need to call the clinic, as soon as we get home, to see if she can," I said. "I really miss her even though I don't seem to count, with Maudie. She loves Tony and that's it." Kinky started laughing.

"In a few minutes I am going to Kerrville and I will be glad to pick her up for y'all," Kinky said.

Twenty minutes later, after talking to Susan at Hoegemeyers, I called Kinky and then Trigger and I took off for Kerrville. My first stop was to get groceries at H-E-B. Then I went to Hoegemeyers to meet Cassie, one of their new, sweet vet techs, so she could sign-off on Cowboy's adoption forms, because she had fallen in love with him, after we had rescued him from the pound, and then taken him there to get him neutered and his shots, etc.!

"It is so nice to meet you, Cousin Nancy!" Cassie said, as she filled out Cowboy's adoption papers. "I love Cowboy so much! My husband and I have L.T., an Aussie mixed with Blue Heeler and Border Collie that we rescued last year. And Cowboy is the same size as L.T. and they are already best friends. Thank you for letting us adopt him."

"No, thank you, Cassie. We are all so happy about you adopting Cowboy, before he ever made it to our rescue ranch. He's a very lucky dog."

"Cowboy is really trained. He sits on command, heels and is house broken!" Cassie bragged, as she handed me my clipboard. Then Maude entered the lobby all excited and started looking around the room for Tony, her hero, but since he wasn't there, she acknowledged me and wagged her tail, so I picked her up and we came home. And the minute that she was reunited with T.—I once again became invisible to her.

This evening, three minutes before the Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears, I called Kinky to see if it was okay for Tone and me to come over for a visit. "Sure Nance. Y'all come on over."

When we walked inside the Lodge, we were first greeted by The Friedmans, in the kitchen and then we walked into the big room and said our howdies to Kinky. "Y'all just missed Dylan," Kinky said, as he lit up a cigar. "Today is his birthday and he is sixty-eight years old. Can you believe that? Sixty-eight."

"Well, Kink, in dog years he's not that old," I said. "He's nine years older than me and I can't believe that. Tony, how old is Dylan in dog years?"

"About nine and a half or so." When the Jets and Steelers game started, Buttermilk took us home.

Tonight I have some exciting news to tell you about my good friends: Copper Love, the incredible world famous horse whisperer and Connie Strong, who wrote an incredibly great article about Copper for the popular magazine, "Horseback!"  And I promise that you will love reading it. Yeah, Copper and Connie—Y'all Really Rock!

P.S. Happy Birthday, Dylan! You Really Rock, Too!

Have a great evening and May The Force Be With Y'all!

My Finger Wouldn't Quit Bleeding!

Well, I guess that I am just lucky, because today has been a another wonderful day for me. This morning after I walked eight more miles with Leslie, I spent my morning doing paperwork, answering e-mails and returning many phone calls.

After lunch Tony and I went outside and started mowing the rescue ranch, so it will look beautiful for our 1st Annual Dog Adoption and Training Seminar this coming Saturday. Since T.'s back was out, he rode the riding lawn mower and I push-mowed for three hours and then I grabbed the Weedeater and did some trimming around the dog pens.

When we finished working outside we came inside the trailer and sweet Tony plucked fifty-four stickers that were stuck and embedded in my clothes. Thank you, Tone, even though you called me a stickler for yard work. I am thrilled with how much we accomplished outside today and hopefully by tomorrow we can finish it up in three hours or less.

Twenty-two minutes into our nightly Happy Hour, after I drank a glass of  fine, red boxed wine and Tony had finished off his beer the phone rang at six forty-seven and I let Carlton take the call. "Nancy, Tony! Tony, Nancy! Please pick up the phone. This is Mary Chavoustie with Texas Animal Imprints magazine. Connie Strong and I are at your gate and it is closed. We have a present that we want to give to y'all..."

"Hello, Mary. How are you? You and Connie are at the gate?" I asked, puzzled that a cell phone was getting service out here.

"No, actually, we are calling you from Kinky's Lodge. Frank let us use Kinky's phone..." As soon as we hung up, Tony went outside and jumped into Kermit and took off to go open the gate for them.

Two minutes later Connie and Mary pulled up to the trailer, got out of Connie's car, wearing big grins on their faces as they always do, and then the hug-fest began. "We just finished interviewing Copper Love and we love her," Connie said. "What an interesting woman..."

"We couldn't resist coming out to see y'all since we were so close," Mary said.

"We have a present to give to you," Connie said, as she went over to her car and opened the back seat door. "Since we can't be here for your annual Dog's Thanksgiving Dinner we brought you this to help cook their dinner." Connie held up a large, shiny stock pot with a cute kitchen towel, two big wooden spoons and three pot holders attached to it by a ribbon. Tone and I grinned.

"OMG!" I said. "Thank y'all so much! I love it and we sure can use it. I swear, y'all are two of the sweetest women I know. I can't believe that you drove all of the way out here to bring us a present. I'm gonna go get my camera. I'll be right back."

When I came back outside—Tony shot us. Mary is on the left and Connie is on the right. Then Mary shot Tony and me with the pot.
We had a short, but really fun visit with these two super cool women and trust me, there was a lot of laughing. After I showed them my new teeth and told them about my whistling problem they complimented me and then we talked about their hilarious "bloody" trip to Walmart to buy our gift, after interviewing Copper. "Before checking out at Walmart we went to the Eye Care department to borrow a pair of scissors, so we could cut the ribbon and I cut my finger on a sharp edge under the lid handle and my finger started bleeding profusely." We all started laughing. "There was blood all over my clothes and jeans and my finger wouldn't quit bleeding," Connie continued. "So, we then went to the Customer Service department and I told them that I wasn't going to sue them, but they needed to remove the stock pot from their inventory, because of the sharp edge and that they needed to give me a Band Aid." Then she showed us her bandaged finger and we laughed. "Tomorrow I am going to call your friend Rick Reichenbach, "The Friendly Lighthouse Keeper" in Port Aransas and make a date to go interview him."

"Y'all are going to love Rick," I said. "I'll call him tonight. Hopefully, he will invite you to spend the night on the island. It is a totally awesome experience and..."

As the sun sank behind the mountain, knowing that they had a five hour drive ahead of them to get home, they told us that they had to leave, so we had another hug-fest and then we bid them farewell and wished them a safe trip home. "Please tell Joni that we send her our best," I half-hollered, as they drove away.

P.S. 'Erb Cares, I am sorry that I missed your phone call last night. I love you and Karen and please give her and y'all's five dogs a hug from me.

Y'all have a great evening!

Food For Thought!

At seven-thirty this morning, Tony went out to the barn to get the groceries for our dog's Christmas dinner. Then it was my turn. I filled up four large aluminum roasting pans with mixed vegetables and put them into the oven to heat. I used a large pot to heat the rest of the vegetables on the stove top. Then I filled up two big pots with olive oil and started simmering it, so it would be hot when we added it to the mixture in the three buckets.

When Lisa arrived Tony put her to work immediately, while he opened up the ground turkey packages, Lisa added the large bags of cheese as Toto stood by and closely supervised her.

Then Tone added the stuffing, ground turkey, eggs, minced garlic, mixed vegetables and hot olive oil and then he began mixing up the dogs hot Christmas dinner in the buckets! I knew we were almost ready to go outside and feed the dogs, so I called Kinky. "Kink, we're just about ready to feed the dogs," I said, as the high powered electric drill used to mix up the food, whined loudly in the background.

"What? Where are you? I can hardly hear you..." I stepped outside on the porch.

"I'm sorry," I said. "That was the drill. Tony is mixing up the hot dinner right now. We're ready to serve our dogs their Christmas dinner!" Three minutes later Kinky arrived in Mr. Green Jeans and the feast began outside!

Tony, Lisa and Kinky grabbed the heavy buckets of hot food and took off to feed our dogs! Tony and Lisa began feeding the excited dogs on the east side of the rescue ranch, while Kinky started feeding the dogs on the west side. Here is a picture I took of Kinky feeding Pearl, and then taking off to serve her roommate, Laz!

Twenty minutes later, you could have heard a pin drop, because all of the dogs had been fed their delicious holiday meal! Then Lisa, Tony and Kinky retraced their steps and served up seconds to all of our dogs! And, the dogs licked their bowls clean both times!

While Tony and Lisa cleaned the pens, I came inside. First, I cleaned up the kitchen, and then I started preparing our Christmas dinner as my iPod played my favorite tunes from our Bose dock. Here's a picture that I took from the kitchen window of our 'elaborate' table setting.

At two-thirty Tone and I went into Outer Space and enjoyed our holiday dinner with Lisa, Melody, Copper Love and Kinky even though it was a little bit cold outside! Everyone at the table was wearing one to three layers of clothing as the temperature outside slowly inched its way up to fifty-six degrees. Copper and Lisa were really bundled up, too. Their outfits included pretty mufflers wrapped tightly around their necks, and I loved the knitted purple wool, pull-down cap Copper wore!

Fortunately, no one was shaking from the cold, as everyone ate their dinner. Kinky teased me about us eating outside and I told him, "Kinky, our kitchen table is covered up with all of my book stuff, and besides it isn't big enough for six people." Our meal was delicious except for the wheat rolls, because like always I had over baked them. They were so hard and brittle, they made Kinky laugh out loud when he tried to break one open and it shattered into a million tiny pieces on his plate! "Great rolls, Nance," he laughingly remarked, as the wind blew the bread crumbs off of his plate onto Copper's plate and muffler.

"I know," I said. "I fondly call them 'My Food for Thought Rolls,' Kink. You see, the minute you think about eating one of them they vanish into thin air. Think about it." Tony started laughing and bread crumbs flew out of his mouth and found immediate shelter on Lisa's white muffler, which instantly made it look like Lisa had just returned from a blinding sand storm! Fortunately, she didn't notice and I kept my mouth shut.

Following dessert, we went inside the trailer to warm up. As we defrosted in front of my laptop computer, we watched Susan Boyle's incredibly great April '09 debut performance on England's Got Talent and there wasn't a dry eye amongst us.

Y'all have a great evening! Happy Holidays!

I've Also Got Ben Here For Back Up!

Because of Tony I had the hardest time this morning doing my six mile walk inside the trailer with Leslie Sansone, because I was laughing so hard! Right before I made the two mile mark, Mama and Abbie started barking, which always means something is going on outside and we need to check it out.

I was doing knee lifts when I looked out the window to see Tone run by, the outside of our front yard, like he was chasing something! A minute later Tony came inside the trailer and he was out of breath, "Princess dug out, again and she won't let me catch her like she usually does! She's turned it into a game, now!" Then Mama and Abbie started barking, again. We looked out the front window and watched Princess do a run by. She looked like she was laughing and having a really great time! I loved it!

For the next two miles, as I kicked and stomped with Leslie in the big room and the kitchen, Tony and Princess kept running back and forth in front of the trailer! And, every time that they would run past the window it would cause me to laugh even harder.

By the time I finished my six laughing miles, my back was hurting from laughing so much, and Princess was finally back in her pen thank goodness!

While Lisa and Matt walked our dogs, and Ben placed (h)uge rocks around the outside of Princess and Marlin's pen to hopefully keep them in, I cooked lunch for Tony, Ben and me, and that is when I decided to try to make Julia Child's recipe "Potage Veloute Aux Champignons" (Cream of Mushroom Soup) on page forty in her book, for tomorrow's lunch, because it seems to be one of Julia's less complicated recipes, and I already have most of the ingredients, and I've also got Ben here for back up if I need his help!

This afternoon after lunch Tony and I took Julia Child to Hoegemeyer Animal Clinic to get her shots and to get her spayed, because no one in Medina has claimed her. I guess she was dumped. Then we swung by H.E.B. to buy several fifty pound sacks of dog food for our rescued dogs, because our source for free dog food that we used to get has seemed to have dried up, and is no longer available because of the economy.

I went over to the Lodge to see Kinky around four o'clock and I had a fun visit with him and Copper Love, the talented artist who beautifully illustrated Kinky's latest book Heroes of A Texas Childhood!

Y'all have a great evening and please wish me luck with my first and probably last Julia Child recipe! I might get Tony or Ben to make a short video clip of me preparing it.

Milk Money!

Friday afternoon, Will came over to the trailer to show us his first video, that he made of his good friend, Mickey "The Milk" Baden, shooting balls on Kinky's pool table! Will shot Mickey, in the Lodge, the night before!

When Will showed Tone and me Milk Money, our jaws dropped to the floor! I could not believe, that Will had put it together in less than thirty minutes, but then again, I can, because Will is a Mac Wizard! Here it is: Milk Money

After we watched Milk Money five or six times, Buttermilk took Tony, Will and me to Kinky's and Copper Love's book signing at Wolfmueller's Books! When we arrived, Sandy and Jon's bookstore was packed with people, getting their books signed by Copper and Kinky! I loved it!

While we were there, we visited with our friends, Mary Jo, Laura, Sandy and Jon, Grace Atwood, Dylan Ferrero, Jane, Frank, Marcie Friedman, Steve Price, Irene, Jim & Liz Cravotta, Beth, and her father, Bob, Jan & Todd Bauer, Jim McMahon, Harley & Becky, Kinky and Copper! It was sorta like a family reunion, but no one was related except for Kinky and Marce.

At one point during the fun book signing, Grace Atwood introduced us to her sweet sister-in-law, Vicki, and her nice husband, who, unfortunately, I can't remember his name, that have just moved here. They are our new neighbors! After handshakes, Vicki asked me to go with her to the "Kinky bookshelf section" so I could recommend some of Kinky's books for her to buy.

"Well, this one here is my favorite," I said, as I pulled a copy of my book, The Road To Utopia: How Kinky, Tony & I Saved More Animals Than Noah off of the shelf! Grace started laughing! Then she quickly explained to Vicki and her husband, that I had written the book. Then I recommended some of Kinky's books.

Vicki ended up buying several Kinky books, and mine, too! Here is a picture of me signing her copy of my book. Vicki is the pretty blond, standing behind me. And that's Mary Jo ringing up sales.

As Copper and Kinky continued to meet people and sign their names,

Sandy came up to me, "Nance, did you see Tony's postcard display table?"

"Nope," I replied. Then Sandy led me over to a this table displaying all of T.'s postcards! I was impressed! It was beautiful!

At six-thirty, when the book signing was over, Buttermilk took Will, Tony and me back to the ranch. Fortunately, we made it home just before dark-thirty!

Around eight o'clock, Tone half-hollered from his office, down the hall, "Nance, Sandy and Jon are online with me on iChat! Come here and say hi to them!" This was the first time that we had iChatted with them! The four of us had a really fun visit, talking about the book signing! And, it was fun to see them talking to us from their house!

We went to bed early, because I had to get up early. Before leaving Wolfmueller's, I had told Kinky that I wanted to make breakfast tacos for everyone in the morning, before he and Frank took off for Dallas, and Marcie took off for Vietnam. So, this morning at eight o'clock, Tony and I went over the river and through the woods with eighteen hot breakfast tacos!

Kinky, Marcie, Frank, Will, T. and I had a fun breakfast over at the Lodge, and there was a ton of laughter! "Nance," Kinky said. "Your breakfast tacos are delicious! I am very impressed with your cooking."

"Kink, don't talk with food in your mouth," I teased.

"No, seriously, Nance, I think you and I should start a breakfast taco cafe. We could make millions with these! We could name it..." We had a lot of fun thinking up possible names.

By nine, Kink and Frank were on their way to Dallas, so Tone and I came home, so Marcie could pack for her trip back to Vietnam.

While Tone fed the dogs outside and cleaned their pens, I went outside and visited with June, as she groomed our dogs. Then I took pictures of three more dogs that we have rescued this week, so I could send them to Pat, to post on our web site: utopiarescue.com
Here's a picture of Lefty aka Buddy! We rescued him seven years ago, but he was returned to us last Saturday, because he is not a cat fancier. He is one great dog and I hope that he finds another forever home real soon!

Here is a picture of Lobo! Lobo is big, friendly dog, that was abused, but you could never tell it. He is about one and half years old and very outgoing and friendly. Lobo would make a great companion for someone who doesn't fancy felines.

Here is a picture of Scooby Doo! Scooby is a precious little dog, that loves children, especially rowdy little boys! He is upbeat, and only one year old. He is a Libra, and like me, he loves to have fun and laugh!

Around one o'clock, Tony came into the trailer, "Nance, there are some people here from New York, that have asked to see Cousin Nancy." I went outside and found them down by Pearl Jam and Laz's pen.

As soon as I saw them, I recognized them! It was Denise and Bruce! Four years ago, they had come out to the rescue ranch, and visited with us. After introducing them to all of our great dogs, we went into the Space Ship, and ended up in Outer Space, where we had another great visit!

This afternoon, Marcie came by to say goodbye to us, and then she took off for Vietnam. We hated to see her leave, but fortunately, she will be back in May. We love her! After she left, Tone and I had a fun visit with Copper, as always!

After Copper left, our good friends, Jan and Todd Bauer came up to the trailer, after they had walked eighteen of our dogs! They had a birthday present for me! They gave me a beautiful Lenox Fine Crystal vase, which I love! Thank you, Jan and Todd! I already have flowers in it! And, thank you for walking our dogs! We love y'all!

I am sorry for this being such a long blog, but now I am caught up, and fixin' to watch a movie with Tone!

Y'all have a great evening!

The Book Signing Was A Blast At Wolfmueller's Books!

Today has been so much fun! This morning, Jim and Leo came out and walked our dogs, and so did our new volunteers, Sha and Lisa! The dogs loved it! We love y'all!

The book signing was a blast at Wolfmueller's Books! And, the bookstore was packed with people standing in line to get their books autographed! Here are a couple of pictures that I took of Copper Love and Kinky's book signing!

I'm pooped, and will write all about it tomorrow! Thank you, Jim, Leo, Lisa and Sha!

Y'all have a great evening!

Moon Pie Blues!

This morning started out great, and then it went weird fast. Tony and Ben did their chores outside, as I walked six fast miles inside. Around nine-forty-five, before Tony took off to go shoot some pictures, we had this conversation. "Do you want to go with me to the Apple Store to look at computers, when you get back?" I asked.

"Why don't you ask Ben, and see if he wants to go. I'm not going to be gone that long." Then Tony gave me a hug, grabbed his camera backpack, and drove away in Trigger. Ben was busy mowing, so I came inside and did some paperwork.

An hour later, Ben came inside the trailer, to talk to me about our new dogs. After we had discussed the dogs, I said, "Do you want to go to the Apple Store a little later, with Tone and me?"

"No, Nance," Ben said, shaking his head. "I've got a lot of mowing to do. I think I'll just stick around here." Then Ben left the trailer and I went back to doing my paperwork.

Around twelve-thirty, after catching up with all of my paperwork, I took a shower, and then dressed up. Normally, it is turtlenecks or flannel shirts around here, but since we were going to the Apple Store, I wore a new blouse, that I got from Walmart, my faded Levi's and my pink Justin Gypsy boots. I even braided my long gray ponytail, and put on a little mascara—we were going to town!

I was starting to get really hungry, by one-forty-five. I couldn't figure out where Tony was. I didn't make lunch, because I figured that T. would be showing up any minute, and then we would eat our lunch at a restaurant in Bandera.

Forty-five minutes later, still no Tone. I needed to mail some letters, so Buttermilk and I went to Medina. After mailing my mail, we came straight home. When I walked inside the trailer, Carlton was flashing! Tony had called!

"Hi, Nance. I should be home in about thirty minutes. I got some awesome pictures. I hope that you and Ben went to San Antonio and got your new computer. Love you. Bye."

I realized that there had been some bad miscommunication, and it was now too late to go to San Antone, so I went out to the front porch to talk to Ben. When he saw me, he turned off the weed eater. "What's up?"

"Nothing now," I said, followed by a laugh. "Tony just called, and he is on his way back to the ranch."

"When I came back to work, and saw Buttermilk gone, I figured that you had gone to meet Tony for lunch at the Apple Store in Medina."

"No, Ben," I said. "I went to Medina to mail some letters. We just got back a few minutes ago. And, it's too late now to go to San Antonio to get my computer."

"You were going to buy a computer at the Apple Store in San Antonio? I thought you were asking me eat lunch with you and Tony in Medina. I'm sorry, I misunderstood you." We then started laughing.

We visited a little while longer, then Ben went back to work, and I came inside and ate some leftover chicken salad with a couple of crackers, and I chased it down with a cold glass of water. Fifteen minutes later, Ben came inside the trailer for his pay check.

Just as I handed the check to Ben, Tony walked inside the trailer and said, "Did you get your computer?" Ben and I started laughing.

"Nope," I said. "I thought that you would be back around twelve-thirty, so we could go eat lunch and get my computer. I just ate some chicken salad for lunch. Have you eaten?"

"I'm sorry, Babe," Tony said. "I thought you and Ben were going to San Antonio. I ate a apple pie at the Mini Mart for lunch. I'm really sorry that you didn't get your computer. Ben, is the Apple Store open on Sundays?"

"Yeah sure," Ben said.

"Nance, let's go Sunday?" Tone asked. As he told us all about the pictures that he had taken today. I opened up the freezer door and pulled out a box.

"I need some comfort food right about now," I said, as I opened up the box, and then I pulled out a smaller box. "Ben, the other day when Tony and I went to H.E.B. I bought this. I never eat stuff like this, but for some reason I bought it, and now I am going to eat it." Then I read the directions. "It says it can only be microwaved. Y'all want to go over to the Lodge with me, so I can zap this thing?"

"Sure," Ben said. "Kinky's got some buttered pecan ice cream in his freezer, too." We took off for the Lodge. When we arrived, Copper Love was there visiting with Will. After hugs, Copper asked me what I was zapping in the microwave.

"Copper, today has been a little bit crazy for me, so I am eating some comfort food. I swear, this past month has been something else."

"Nance," Ben said. "Mercury is still fading out of retrograde, and you know that we are under a full moon tonight. That it explains it all."

"You're right!" I said. "Copper, I guess I've just got the moon pie blues!"

Y'all have a great evening!

P.S. Kinky called twice today from Amsterdam! They are having a wonderful time and he can't wait to get back to the ranch!

Hello New Mexico! Here Comes The Hobbit Express!

Today has been a lot of fun! This morning I went to Kerrville, because Cindy Pickard had asked me to do her a favor. She had asked me to meet her at San Saba Cap, at ten o'clock, because she was getting her signs aka 'vinyl skins' put on her new FJ Toyota! I was one minute late.

When I arrived, Cindy was outside, with the owner, discussing the placement of the beautiful signs. "Hi Nancy," Cindy said. "I want you to meet John Baker. He owns San Saba Caps." John and I shook hands. "Didn't these turn out great!" My long time best friend asked, as she showed them to me.

"They're beautiful," I said. When Cindy and John were done, I told John that I had been in the embroidery business for over twenty years, and that I was very impressed with his work. Then we went inside his store, and Paul McCullar, came up to us and said hello to Cindy, and then he introduced himself to me. Paul and I quickly got to talking about being in the embroidery business, so he gave Cindy and me a tour of their work area, where their embroidery equipment is. Wow! This company was big time! In fact, they had so many sewing heads—it made my head spin!

When Cindy and I left San Saba Cap, we ran a couple of errands. Our last stop was at Pier One. When we walked out the store's door, I was carrying a sack with two gifts, that Cindy had bought for me!

On our way back to San Saba Cap, we ran into a traffic jam—and we were stranded at the corner where Wolfmueller's Books is a few doors down from. As we watched some kind of giant government equipment, that was causing the backup, slowly start moving. I looked over at Cindy, and saw Jon Wolfmueller waving at me from the corner! Cindy quickly rolled down Trigger's window, "Hi Jon!" I half-hollered. Before Jon could speak, the traffic jam was over, and I had to take off! Sorry Jon.

When we pulled up at San Saba Cap, Cindy and I were in shock, when we saw her beautifully decorated FJ! "It's perfect!" Cindy said, with excitement in her voice.

"OMG Cindy, it's beautiful!..." John came out and met us, as we climbed out of Trigger, and he was wearing a bigger smile than Cindy was. Here are some pictures that Cindy took of it, when she got home. By the way, Cindy named her FJ—the Hobbit Express! I love it!

Late this afternoon, I went over to the Lodge and had a fun visit with Kinky, Will Wallace and Copper Love! Copper is the artist, that did all of the artwork for Kinky's new self-published book, Heroes Of A Texas Childhood, which should be coming out real soon!

Around four o'clock I returned to the rescue ranch. Twenty minutes later, Will came over to borrow some tools from Tone. We had a nice visit with him. As soon as Will was gone, Kinky showed up with two people from Southern Living magazine! "Nance, Tone," Kinky said. This is Jennifer McKenzie Frazier, and Robbie Caponetto. They want to shoot me over here."

After howdies and handshakes, we all went into Outer Space for a short visit, with these two nice people. When Robbie pulled his camera out and started shooting Kinky, I went to get my camera. When I came back, I asked Robbie if he would mind if I shot Kinky, too. He had no problem with it! I shot Kinky seventy-three times! Here is a picture of Robbie and Jennifer and a few pictures of Kinky.

When the shooting had commenced, we took them on a tour of the rescue ranch. They loved my writing cabin, and admired the painting, 'The Von Kinky Family Singers,' that Dusty Pendleton had done! Then we went on the dog tour. Jennifer fell in love with several of our dogs, while Robbie shot Kinky several more times with our dogs. Jennifer told me that the article will probably be in their upcoming November issue of Southern Living! I can't wait!

Before I go watch a movie, I want to say that I met four new people today, that impressed me, and that I really liked. Thank you, Paul and John, and Jennifer and Robbie! Y'all rock!

Y'all have a great evening!

The Arts & Entertainment Channel!

Warning! This is another long one!

Tony and I arrived at the Cowboy Steak House, around a quarter till seven. Kinky was standing outside, talking to Rambam. We visited with them for a few minutes, and then the four of us went inside—to the bar, to visit with Sage and Dylan Ferrero, Copper Love, and to meet John Mankieiwicz!

After the handshakes, hugs and howdy doody's, I went back to the bar to visit with Copper. "Hello, Cousin Nancy," a woman said, sitting next to Copper. I knew the face, but I couldn't remember her name, then the man sitting next to the woman greeted me, too!

I said hello to them, and then Copper and I visited for a few minutes. Then I went back over to Tony, tugged on his sleeve and whispered, "Tony, who are those two people sitting next to Copper? They said hello to me, and I know we know them. And, they called me Cousin Nancy, too."

Tony looked over to see. "That's Randy and Lisa, Nance." I was so embarrassed! I love those two people. I then went back to where they were seated, and apologized to them for not recognizing them. They laughed about it, and we had a short visit.

Then John enters the bar, and Kinky introduces me to his friend, John! After handshakes, Kinky says, "John, Cousin Nancy is a writer, too, and she has a very popular blog, with a ton of fans."

"I know," John said. "I have read it." Oh my gosh! I couldn't believe my ears, and I was scared that my head was fixin' to swell, because this famous, great writer actually had read my blog! I was on cloud nine! I couldn't wait to tell Tone, so I took off!

"Tony! John Mankieiwicz has read my blog! He told me so! He was a writer for the popular television series, 'House,' during its first two years on the air! He has also written tons of articles for big named magazines, Playboy, Rolling Stone, and newspapers, etc.—that man knows how to write! I can't believe he has read my blog!" Tone was thrilled for me.

Then Abel, Rosie and Laura entered the bar, and there were more handshakes, hugs and howdy doody's. After a brief visit with them, Linda, another famous NoMad, enters the bar, and walks right up to T. and me, and catches us up on the NoMads latest dog agility victories! Then she left us, because she had to get back to work at the steak house. Then Kinky walks over to Tony and me.

"Nance, everyone has arrived. Linda told me that our table is ready. Would you and Tony go check it out in advance, while I roundup everybody?" Tony and I left the bar. Linda saw us, and showed us to our table.

Tony and I couldn't figure out where we should sit, so we finally sat down near the middle of the table—across from each other. In no time at all, everyone was seated at the table, and the fun began! The food was great, and so were the conversations!

My favorite part was listening to Kinky, John and Dylan talk about the past they had shared. They were backstage at 'The Last Waltz' concert at Winterland, and they told us some hilarious backstage stories, about their friends Mike Bloomfield, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Dr. John, Neil Young, etc.! I didn't want the evening to end, but unfortunately it did, and Trigger took Tony and me home.

This morning, I changed things up! While Aaron fed the dogs and cleaned their pens, Tony and I went to Randy and Lisa's Save Inn Restaurant for breakfast! And, yes it was delicious, too!

When we returned to the rescue ranch, I called Kinky to let him know we were back at the ranch, because John had wanted to come over to see our rescue ranch—he loves dogs, too! Needless to say—we gave him 'The Grand Tour!' John wanted to see our dogs first, so we took him to every pen to meet our dogs. He petted them and took many pictures of them. When he met David Beckham, our soccer playing wild hog, he must have shot him at least fifty times!

After the meet and greet with our dogs and pig, we took John into The Space Ship, and then went into Outer Space! Kinky and John swapped more old stories about their famous friends, and there was much laughter. Before they left, I gave John a tour of the trailer and my writing cabin! John liked them—especially my plastic garden tub!

After lunch, Kinky called to invite us to come over to the Lodge. "Nance, tell Tone, that last night, John beat me twice in pool. I want Tony to win back the title." Seven minutes later, Tony and I were at the Lodge—Copper, Sage and Dylan were there! "John," Kinky said. "I want you to play a game of pool with The Medina Bulldog."

Before the game commenced, John was given the pool playing name, 'The California Kid.' As John and Tony took turns sinking balls into the pockets, Copper and Kinky came up with a new name for John—The California Wussie, because of his finese with each of his shots. John liked it, and laughed, and then he added Mr. to his new moniker, and then sank the eight ball. Mr. California Wussie -1, Medina Bulldog -0.

After Tone's tragic loss, Kinky got out of his chair, went to the bookcase and grabbed something. "I want to give Mr. California Wussie a trophy for beating Tony and me in pool. Nance, grab your camera and let's all go outside for the award presentation." As we left the Lodge, everyone was laughing at the 'pool' trophy that Kinky had chosen.

Once outside, we decided to shoot a video of the event, for my blog. When everyone had taken their positions over by the Friedman Family Bone Orchard—I turned on the camera and the rest is history!

Before you watch the video clip, I need to tell you that John came to visit Kinky, because he is the writer for a new A & E television series—about Kinky's mystery novels! I can't wait for it to air! And, I wonder what actor is going to play the Kinkster! Here is a picture of John, after receiving his 'pool' trophy! I have posted 'The Pool Award' on the side bar and below, and I must apologize in advance for the shakiness in the video clip— I was laughing way too hard!

Happy Birthday, again Fay! Y'all have a great evening!

I Was A Gracious Loser!

I am sorry for not blogging yesterday, I was exhausted, because I had walked eight fast miles, in the morning, and had not slept well, the night before, because of my upset stomach. So, yesterday afternoon, I took a nap with my dogs, and slept two hours! I've never taken a two hour nap! Then me and my dogs watched the movie, 'Last Chance Harvey,' and I loved it! After that I went to bed, and had some really odd dreams.

This morning I overslept! I didn't wake up until eight o'clock—and that threw me into first gear! After swallowing two baby aspirins, I quickly fed our six hungry dogs and Lucky, the cat. As soon as they had eaten, I started preparing our morning smoothie in our Vita- Mix machine. The ingredients were an apple, banana, a chunk of raw ginger, kale, a carrot, wheat germ, flaxseed, orange juice, blueberries, honey, cinnamon, and a radish—and it was delicious! Tone and I drank all of it.

Following breakfast, while Queen Bee was busy washing our dirty laundry—I walked five fast miles with Leslie! Just as I had finished huffing and puffing—Kinky called! "Nance, we're fixing to come over there."

"That sounds great, Kink!" I said. "But, you need to give me fifteen minutes, so I can shower and get cleaned up. I just finished walking five miles. Okay?" Kinky laughed, and then we said our goodbyes.

Fifteen minutes later, or eleven seconds after I had walked out of the bathroom—clean and fully dressed—Kinky arrived with his friends Lori and Joe! After introductions, Kinky, Tony and I took them on a tour of the rescue ranch. Lori fell in love with L.T. and she and Kinky went into the pen and played with her. L.T. loved it!

When the tour was completed, I invited everyone to go into Outer Space, and we had a really fun time! Thirty minutes later, after I had given Lori, my last copy of my book—it was time for them to leave. Kinky had talked them into going to Kerrville, to eat at that restaurant, with half of its sign still on the ground! I cringed at the thought, and because I really like these two people, I suggested that they eat Rolaids before and after eating their meals. Then Kinky jokingly argued with me about it being a great restaurant. Again, he was talking to deaf ears. My last comment to him was, "Fine Kinky. You are what you eat."

As we walked to Mr. Green Jeans, Tony invited Joe and Lori to come into the Space Ship—and they thought it was pretty cool! Then they loaded up in Green Jeans with Kinky—and left the rescue ranch. I then came inside the trailer, and returned some phone calls, and then Buttermilk took T. and me to Kerrville to run some errands.

As Tony and I were leaving H.E.B., I saw a magazine rack, and saw Harley's picture on the cover of it! I had seen the magazine, last week, on Harley's live web cam, with him on the cover—so I grabbed a copy of the Kerr County People—The premier magazine celebrating the people and life of Kerr County!

As T. steered Buttermilk homeward, I read out loud, the great article about Harley Belew, written by Larry Arnold! Tony and I loved it! Y'all can check it out at: kerrcountypeople.com. It is a great magazine, and I wish it all of the success!

Early this evening, Kinky called. "Nance, how are you doing?"

"I'm fine Kinky."

"Copper is over here. You want to come over and visit with us?" Ten minutes later, I was parking Buttermilk over at the Lodge. Copper, Kinky and I had a really nice visit inside the Lodge! And, Copper and I caught up with each other's news, in between Kinky's constant phone calls.

After his last phone call, "How about a game of pool, Nance?" Kinky asked. "It will give you something to blog about tonight." The three of us laughed, and then Kinky racked up the balls. Kinky broke up the rack of balls—sinking a stripe, and the cue ball in different pockets! I then realized that I actually had a chance to win! The game was short and sweet.

"I won! I can't believe it! It has been over six months since I beat Kinky in a game of pool!" I said, with joy, and in disbelief. "Look Copper, Kinky still has three balls left on the table!"

Kinky laughed. "Yeah, and two of them are mine. Congratulations, Cousin Nancy. Be sure to tell your readers that I was a gracious loser, too." After Copper and I had quit laughing, I promised him that I would.

Y'all have a great evening!

I Can't Wait!

Part II. Continued... Well, I Lied, Again!

This morning, I decided to not exercise today, because I have walked over twenty-four miles, in the last three days, with my friend, Leslie Sansone and her buddies. Actually, I don't know Leslie, but after spending so much time with her—I feel like I know her.

This morning, I went over to the Lodge to visit with Kinky, and he had lots to tell me. First off, he told me that the tickets for the June 13th Ranch Round Up—were selling faster than hot cakes, and he is really excited about it! I can't wait to hear the great legendary Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Jeff Jeff Walker perform! They are two of Texas' favorite songwriters and musicians! I really hope that y'all can make this event, because it is going to be one fantastic concert, and a lot of fun! I can't wait!

Kinky and I then had a business meeting, and then we went outside to the Friedman Family Bone Orchard, and discussed his book that he is going to self publish, and my book that I am going to self publish! Since he is going to self publish and so am I, we talked about the possible names for his publishing company, and some possible names for my publishing company. Unfortunately, I can't tell y'all the names that we've come up with, yet, because they are still not set in stone.

When I returned to the rescue ranch, I did some paperwork and returned phone calls. Then I entered an Ellen Degeneres contest online! I entered the contest for two reasons. One, because of what my fortune cookie had predicted about me fixin' to be real lucky, and secondly because I am trying to raise the money, that it is going to cost me to publish my book! I really hope that I win! Wouldn't that be too cool!

Right after I had officially entered the contest, the phone rang—it was Kinky! "Nance, what are you and Tony doing for lunch? I've got to go to Kerrville, soon."

"Kinky, we were going to eat here, but lunch sounds like fun!" I said. Then we got into a friendly argument. "Wait, you're not wanting us to eat at that Mexican food place? I'm sorry, but I will not eat there—ever again."

"Nance," Kinky said. "There food is great!"

"No it's not!"

"How many times have you eaten there?"

"Two, too many," I answered, then we started laughing.

"Okay. We could eat at La Fours?" Kinky suggested.

"Sorry, they're closed on Mondays."

Kinky suggested two other restaurants, but I refused them both. "No Kinky, I don't care for their food, and the other place, because I don't like their waiter. He always tells us disgusting jokes, and then he invites himself to sit with us at our table, as we try to eat our meal and ignore him. Sorry."

"How about Luby's, Nance?" Kinky suggested. "Or do you have something against them, too?" Then he started laughing.

"Luby's is fine. What time?"

"Two o'clock, okay?"

"That's fine with me. See you in a little while. Bye."

Tone then walks into the 'Big Room' and says, "I'm hungry. Where and when are we going to meet Kinky for lunch?"

I told him, as his stomach loudly growled at me. "Here eat a banana," I suggested. Then I wrote the previous blog, before leaving for Kerrville.

"Kinky, it's Nance," I said. "We're running early. We just passed Albertsons."

"Me, too," Kinky said. "I'm heading to Luby's right now. Bye."

We were the first to get to Luby's, so we sat inside Trigger and listened to my iPod for a few minutes. Then we went inside and went through the serving line and then found us a table. I had just taken my first bite, when I saw Copper Love heading to our table. She put her purse down on a chair, and then she went to get her a plate of food, after we had said our hellos. Then Kinky arrived!

The four of us had a fun lunch—filled with laughter and many wisecracks! As soon as we were done eating, we paid our bills, and went outside for a short visit. Then it was time for us to depart. Here is a picture that I took inside Trigger, of Kinky and Mr. Green Jeans leaving the parking lot, followed by Copper and Ruby Tuesday!

Tony and I then went to Walmart for a few items. I found some adorable placemats and bought two of them for Outer Space. One for our new cabinet and one for the bench between our two captain chairs—with the best view.

When we got home, after we unpacked Trigger, I took the placemats into Outer Space, and made a few changes. I really like my Buddhapug there—it's perfect!

Y'all have a great evening!

This Is Too Cool!

This morning I went over to the Lodge at 7:30. Kinky wanted me to look at some sketches, by our friend, Copper Love, that she has done for an upcoming book! When I saw them I got goose bumps, because they were absolutely beautiful! She is one incredibly talented artist! In other words—I loved her sketches!

This morning, after doing my fast five mile walk, I checked my e-mail. My friend Drew, had sent me an e-mail, asking me to please check out this video on youtube. He wrote that it was amazing and fantastic, and he thinks the full set can be purchased at Star Bucks.

I checked it out and asolutely loved it! It is called, Playing For Change: Song Around the World "Stand By Me!" It is an amazing video and it made me feel good. Please check it out—you'll love it, I promise! I have also posted their web site on the sidebar under 'Favorite Links,' so you can listen and watch their other fantastic music videos!

True Love!

In the wee hours of the morning, Doug Everett and his fabulous crew, began cooking their authentic chuck wagon dinner, to be served later in the day, for over two hundred and forty people!

Saturday, at five in the morning, Tony and I were up! We fed our dogs and cat, and then T. took off to Medina to drink coffee with his friends. While he was away, I made Kinky’s giant birthday card, so everyone at the event could sign it! It looked okay, but it was not the best that I could do—after a sleepless night in Medina. After that, I dusted and vacuumed the trailer—just in case someone had to come inside!

When Tony returned around 7:45, I fixed him and Ben and me breakfast. Ben had spent the night in my writing cabin with his two dogs, Valerie and Penny. After breakfast, Ben went over to Kinky’s to help set up things.

When Tony and Aaron had finished feeding the dogs and cleaning their pens, they clipped on our walkie talkies, and went over to help Ben out. Then I grabbed a drinking glass, from the kitchen cabinet, and wrote the word ‘LOVE’ on it, and then I filled it with water. Then I took another aspirin for my heart, and then drank another glass of ‘worded water.’ I then said a few silent prayers for the event, and then I headed over to Kinky’s. By the time I had parked Trigger—I was filled with love, thanks to M. Emoto’s books—on the power of water! It really does work—I promise!

While Aaron and Ben set up the benches for the concert, A.J. Agiewich, Ben’s business merchandising partner, showed up, and he began setting up their merchandise tables, while Debora busily set up the items for the silent auction in the Gazebo.

After Tony and I had swept the leaves off of the Pavilion floor, the men went to fill the ice chests up with ice, and the water jugs, so I skipped over to the Lodge to see Kinky. His Lodge was full—everyone was in the kitchen and the vibes were great! His sweet sister, Marcie, who had flown in from Vietnam, for the event, was there, and the incredibly talented photographer, Brian Kanof, from El Paso, was there, too, with his better half—Jackie, and Jerome was there from Pasadena, Texas to help us! After a short visit with everyone, I left. I was on my way back to the rescue ranch to get ready, just as Dylan and Sage Ferrero arrived! They are our friends and had volunteered to help out with the parking over at Kinky’s.

By eleven thirty, our great friends and volunteers, Copper Love and Max Swafford were set up, outside of the rescue ranch, ready to greet our guests, and invite them to take a tour of the rescue ranch first, before going over to Kinky’s. Then our friends and wonderful volunteers, Carol Vail and Charlie Cooper arrived to help Tony and me give rescue ranch tours. Then Tony and Aaron arrived to help! We were ready for the event to start—let the fun begin!

At 12:00, Tony opened our rescue ranch gate, and the cars started arriving, and the nicest people on the planet, began walking into our rescue ranch—full of love and smiles and compliments! I don’t know if it was because I had drank those two glasses of ‘love worded water,’ that I saw things through rose-colored glasses, but all I know for sure was—love was definitely in everyone’s hearts! I loved it! Here are some pictures, that Tony and I took of the event! I wish that all of y’all could have been there!

Kinky giving tours of the rescue ranch!

Our dear friends, Dianne and Len Nowicki, showed up, and surprised me with a beautiful turtle for my birthday! It was absolutely gorgeous, and poor Len had to carry, the thirty pound turtle, all the way in! I love it and I plan to put it into Outer Space tomorrow! I gave them a tour of my Space Ship, and then we went into Outer Space for a fun visit! I love those two people!

“Welcome to the rescue ranch!” I said. “I’m Cousin Nancy. Where are y’all from?”

“California. I am Keith O., and this is my friend Jimmy, from San Antonio.”

“Keith?” I said. “Oh my gosh—I finally get to meet you in person, after all of these years!” We hugged and Tony shook hands with them. Then I invited them to go into Outer Space with me, for a visit!

Then our friend, Matt, from Austin, arrived with his latest pictures of Albert Einstein, a dog that we had rescued years ago! And, he joined us in Outer Space! It was a lot of fun and filled with laughter!

Here is a picture of the Gazebo full of items for the silent auction!

A picture of the people in line for their chuck wagon dinner! And, it was absolutely delicious and Kinky could not get over how great it was! He wants to use them again, for our future events!

Here is a picture that Tony took of Carol and Ben talking, with me in the background!

The concert:

P.S. After the concert, when I met Jimmie Dunn and his lovely wife, Nelda, from Arkansas, he confessed that he reads my blog, which absolutely delighted me! Then when he told me that he now has every book that Kinky has written, and his collection was now complete, because he had just bought a copy of “The Missing Puppet Head,” which is only available at Wolfmueller’s Books, where he had also purchased the fantastic book, “The Kinky Files,” the day before! I smiled, and then introduced him to the talented author, Max Swafford, who had written, “The Kinky Files”— because he was standing right behind us!

P.S.S. Love is definitely all you need—and it truly works! Thanks to everyone who came out to help us out on Saturday, and to everyone who has supported us through the years ! I love y’all so much! Have a great evening—I’m headed to bed, now—it’s past my bedtime! Good Night!

When It Rains—It Pours!

Well, you sure can tell that it is full moon time, once again. Yesterday, started out just fine, but late in the afternoon—things went south, after Ben went north, to go see his parents, Rob and Karen, in Mason.

All was well, when Ben showed up with presents for all of us! We exchanged gifts with him, visited, and then the three of us went over to visit with Kinky, and to meet Stuart.

A few days ago, Kinky had helped a friend, rescue an adorable little Pomeranian named Stuart Little. Stuart is about ten years old, and he only weights about five pounds. The little dog is adorable! Kinky’s friend had given Stuart a ‘Lions cut’ because he had been full of mattes and burrs when rescued. Kinky told us that everyone loved the little fella—but Gooie. It seems that Mr. Magoo is jealous of Stuart, and Stuart is jealous of Gooie. So most of the time while we were over at Kinky’s Lodge, we spent keeping Mr. Magoo and Stuart apart. Tony and I stayed over at the Lodge for about an hour, and then we came home, so Kinky and Ben could visit.

When we got home there was a message on the machine. “Hello, I have found a dog with one of your dog tags on his collar. Here’s the number. Please call me when you get this message.”

I looked up the dog tag I.D. number—it was Maxwell Smart! I immediately phoned the woman back to tell her who the dog owner was—but I was too late. When I called and told the woman who I was, she told me that her next door neighbor, Evelyn, had just left with Maxwell Smart and that all was fine. I thanked her for rescuing Maxwell and then we hung up.

Five minutes later, the phone rang and it was Evelyn. “Nancy, Maxwell Smart escaped from the backyard, again. I just picked him up from my neighbor’s house and he is doing just fine, but, I am afraid that I am not going to be able to keep him any longer. It is too risky. I don’t have a car, so could you come and get him?”

“Yes, Evelyn, we can come and get him in the morning, if that will be okay,” I said. “I will try to get a hold of John to ask him if he can pick Maxwell up—before coming to work.”

Evelyn gave me directions to her house, and I told her that I would get back to her as soon as I had heard from John. When the call ended, I went to my laptop, and sent off an e-mail to John, asking him if he could pick up Maxwell Smart in the morning before coming to work.

John shot me back an e, thirty minutes later, telling me that he would be glad to pick up Maxwell for us. I then called Evelyn back to tell her that John would be there between 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning. “What time should I get up?” Evelyn asked. “I don’t usually get up that early.”

“I guess, 8:00?” I said. I didn't know.

“Could you ask John to come at 9:00 instead?"

"Yes, ma’am, I can try. You see, John doesn’t have a telephone, and we communicate by e-mail.”

Hoping John hadn’t gone out for the evening, I e’d him, again—asking if 9:00 would work? John e-mailed right back, telling me that 9:00 would be fine.

I phoned Evelyn, again. “Hi, Evelyn,” I said. “John says he will be there at nine. Okay?”

“Okay,” Evelyn said. “Please tell him to be sure to honk the horn, because I don’t won’t to be standing outside waiting for him.”

“Can’t John just come up, and ring your doorbell?”

“No,” Evelyn answered. “All of the gates are locked, and he will not be able to get into my yard.”

“Evelyn, I think John has gone out for the evening by now, but I will send him an e to please honk the horn. I am going to give him your e-mail address, so you might want to check your e-mail—several times tonight, to make sure he got my message.”

“I keep my computer turned off, and I only check my e-mail in the mornings. I can’t do that. Please tell him to call me.”

“He can’t call,” I said. “John doesn’t have a phone.”

“Well, then call me,” she said, “when you hear from John, to let me know. I stay up til one or two o’clock every night.”

“We go to bed at nine. Hopefully, John will get the message, and I will call you as long as it is before nine o’clock.”

Fortunately, John sent me an e, confirming that he would be sure to honk, and I called Evelyn before nine o’clock. At nine o’clock, Tony went to bed, but I decided to drink a glass of wine and watch TV for awhile—and thank goodness I did!

At 9:55 our phone rang. I decided to let the machine take the call. “Hello, I am sorry about doing this to y’all, but I am real sick, and can not take care of my dogs anymore,” a older man’s voice said. “I left them in two crates at the Echo Hill cattle guard. Tell Kinky I love him.”

I rushed to the telephone. “Hello? Hello?” I said, but the man had already hung up.

Then the phone rang again, but I didn’t hear it because I was in the bedroom—trying to wake up Tony. “Hello, Nancy? This is Liz. A man just called here and woke me up. He said something like he had just dropped off two dogs to us at the Echo Hill cattle guard? He didn’t make a lot of sense, something about being sick and being sorry, and when I asked him who he was—he hung up. Call me in the morning. Bye.”

Tony quickly dressed and then he and I went to the truck and jumped in! Two minutes later, we were at the cattle guard staring at two large dog crates. One of the crates was empty—the other crate was heavy. Together, we lifted the crate into the back of the pickup and returned to the rescue ranch. We carried the crate to a small pen and set it down carefully. Tony made me leave the pen, and then he opened the door to the crate.

Out ran two terribly scared, medium sized dogs! Tony gave them some water and food, and then we came back to the trailer to go to bed.

This morning, John arrived with Maxwell Smart! He told me that Maxwell seemed fine and could not wait to get out of there. “He pulled me to the van! I think he is happy to be back home.”

We told John about the two dogs being dumped here, last night, and then we went outside to check on them. The two dogs were skinny, definitely had mange and scared of us. While the guys began feeding the dogs, I went inside their pen to try to give them treats, and to try to settle them down. They ate a couple of dog treats, but wanted nothing to do with me, so I gave up and went back to the trailer.

I called Liz. She and I discussed the dogs, but we could not figure out, why the man had called her, and how he had gotten her phone number—she lives thirty miles away. We visited for a little while longer, and then we hung up.

As I hung up the phone, the Caller I. D. was flashing! Then it hit me—maybe it will have the man’s phone number! And, sure enough—it did! I phoned several times, but only got a busy signal. The last time I tried, it rang and rang and rang, but no one answered.

Just before noon today, Hoegemeyer’s Animal Clinic was closing early for the holiday, Hank, one of Tony’s and my older dogs, got into a fight with two of our younger dogs—over a toy! Tony called Hoegemeyers to find out when they were closing and Susan told him right now. But when Tony told her about Hank needing to see a doctor, Dr. Rydberg said he would wait at the clinic for Hank. So Tony and Hank took off for Kerrville!

While Tony was gone, Carol came out to walk dogs, and before leaving I suggested that we drive over to Kinky’s for a short visit. When we arrived, Kinky, Marcie, Jamal and Goat were outside playing ball with The Friedmans. I introduced Carol to Marcie, Jamal and Goat, and then Copper drove up in her shiny red, little Miata—Ruby Tuesday! After introductions, she gave Marcie and Kinky a little dog bed for Stuart. Then another car pulled up with two men inside, wanting Kinky to sign their guitars!

With all of the people there, Kinky brought Stuart outside to meet everyone. Everyone thought the little dog was adorable, but no one wanted to adopt him, so Kinky put him back inside the annex, so he and Mr. Magoo wouldn’t get into a fight. “Stuart loves his new bed, Copper!” Kinky said, when he returned.

We visited for a few more minutes, and then Carol and I said our final good byes to everyone or so I had thought. Carol and I climbed into the Explorer, waving goodbye, as I slowly backed out of the filled parking lot. Suddenly, our SUV stopped moving! I had backed into Ruby Tuesday’s face!

Everyone was staring at us! I put ‘Buttermilk’ into drive, and we slowly moved forward a few feet. Then Carol and I jumped out of the car to see the damages. It didn’t take a rocket scientist, to know that Ruby Tuesday—needed to make an appointment for a facelift, and her left cheekbone definitely needed Botox.

Copper was so great about it all! She didn’t even let me feel terrible. After I apologized to her, Carol and I drove back over to the rescue ranch, so I could call our insurance agent. I made the call, and hopefully, everything will be just fine in a couple of days. Sorry about that, Copper and thank you for being so sweet.

And lastly—Hank is fine, and he will be coming home on Wednesday! Merry Christmas!

Happy 60th Birthday—Copper Love!

Late this afternoon, Tony and I went to Kerrville to run a few errands. When we returned to the rescue ranch, I called Kinky to let him know that we were back.

“Kerrville is more socked in with fog, than we are,” I said. “What’s going on?”

“Bob K. is over here, and Copper is about to leave,” Kinky said. “Why don’t you and Tony come over and shoot a game of pool with us? Just a minute, Nance—Copper wants to talk to you.”

“Hello Cousin Nancy,” Copper said. “I’ve got a problem and I need your and Tony’s help!”

“Sure, what do you need?” I asked.

“The other day, I rescued a dove with a broken wing,” Copper said. “I’m looking for a large wire cage that I can put branches, etc. into it, so it can exercise. All I have is a parakeet cage, which is too small.”

“Copper, let me talk to Tony, and I’ll get back to you,” I said. “Are you fixin’ to leave?”

“Yes. Why?”

“Because, Tony and I are fixin’ to go over to the Lodge—give us just a minute and we will be over there.”

“Okay, I’ll wait for you at the gate,” Copper said.

Tony needed to go check on the dogs, so I went over to the Lodge by myself. I met up with Copper at the gate. She was sitting inside ‘Ruby Tuesday,’ her Red Miata—with the top down! As always, Copper was wearing her cap, and trademark smile. “Hi Copper!” I said.

“Hi Cousin Nancy,” Copper said. “Are you going to drive back to Kerrville with the top down? It’s foggier in Kerrville, than it is out here.”

“Yes, I am,” Copper stated. “I love this kind of weather.”

We talked for a few minutes more, and before leaving, Copper said. “Today’s my 60th Birthday! I just had to tell someone.”

“Wow Copper, I didn’t know—Happy 60th Birthday!”

“Thank you,” she said, “I have got to get on the road before it gets dark. Talk to you soon, bye.”

Copper drove off, and I drove up to the Lodge and went inside.

Our friend, Bob K. and Kinky were having a discussion, so I went outside to visit with Kinky’s slightly overweight dogs. Not that I have any room to talk about being overweight, but they are truly starting to look like barrels with toothpicks for legs. I just look like Frosty the Snowman.

When I came back inside, so did The Friedmans. Kinky gave them some treats and then he suggested that Bob K. and I shoot a friendly game of pool. Bob K. suggested that we put some money on the game and I said, “I only play for pennies, and a nickel is my limit.” The bets were off—Bob K. had no pennies—just bills.

Bob K. racked up the balls, and the fun began. I shot like I usually do—poorly. In no time at all, Bob K. cleared the table, and won the game! Then Kinky challenged him to a game of pool.

Bob K. racked up the balls, and took the first shot. The game between The Hummingbird Man and Bob K. didn’t last long at all. It was like Kinky would sink two balls and then Bob K. would sink two balls, etc. Bob K. nearly had the game won, when he hit the eight ball, and it fell short of going into the pocket by about an eighth of an inch. The Hummingbird Man then walked up, called the pocket, took his stance, and then sunk the black ball with ease!

Bob K. one—The Hummingbird Man one—Cousin Nancy zero.

Knowing that I had interrupted their meeting, I said my goodbyes, and then drove Trigger, over the river and through the woods—to the trailer.

Happy 60th Birthday Copper Love! The next time that you are with Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones—please tell them Cousin Nancy is one of their oldest living fans, and would love to meet them. And, Copper if that is not possible, could you please just get them to sign something for me? I'd do it for you!
