Today has been fun. This morning Ben Welch came out to work for a few days and it is always fun when Ben is around, and Jim, another one of our great dog-walking volunteers, showed up to walk our dogs for us. Thank you, Jim for walking our dogs—they loved it!
This morning while Ben and Tony were outside working I walked another six miles, inside the trailer, with Leslie Sansone again and it felt good, because I got a lot of thinking done while I was walking off those miles with her and her gang on the TV set. By the time I had walked the six miles, I had decided to stop eating gluten food for a while, because of a TV show, that I had seen earlier this morning, that basically said that it makes you fat and is not good for you.
Around noon, after I had cleaned up I went outside to visit with Tony and Ben. After I showed Ben my new, used Space Ship #2, which he loved, we talked about my decision to quit eating food with gluten in it and he thought it was a good idea. So, I am fixin' to be gluten-free and looking forward to it.
While Ben and Tone worked outside on the water pipes, I finished writing my third column for the magazine, "Texas Animal Imprints" March /April publication and I just finished writing it about an hour ago and I hope that Joni likes it. I titled it, "Promises."
It is now nearly nine o'clock and I need to go to bed, because I'm already tired from being gluten-free all day. Tomorrow I plan to get up real early to exercise again, but to a different drummer this time. I am going to try to do that dancing video "Dancing With The Stars: Fat-Burning Cardio Dance" for an hour, so please wish me luck and hope that I don't break a leg. So, good night and sweet dreams to all from Utopia.
Y'all have a great evening!

Blast From The Past!
Compared to yesterday—today has been incredibly great—thank goodness! And I am proud to announce, after all of the water pipes that broke yesterday, that we now have hot and cold water running inside our trailer and our "his and hers toilets" are no longer frozen and working properly! Thanks to our great friends Charlie, Ellen and Aaron, who came out and helped fix them for us.
Yesterday morning my last dream before waking up was being so happy because the sun had finally come out and then I woke up and discovered that I had over slept and the sun was shining outside and the outside temperature was quicky rising and I could not have been happier.
After feeding our dogs I called Kinky to see if he wanted some Cousin Nancy breakfast tacos and then I started cooking them, as I sipped some Dunkin' Donut French Vanilla coffee and watched the morning news to find out how many people had wrecked their cars in the Alamo City and the school closings due to the ice, while Tony, who didn't go to the Old Timer because of the icy roads, was outside checking on the dogs and hand-watering them, using the water that Ellen & Charlie had brought over the day before, because our water pump was frozen and we were nearly out of water.
Breakfast over at the Lodge with Kinky was fun and we tried to laugh about the troubles we had, because of the uninvited Artic Blast that had been wreaking havoc on all of us for the past four days.
When T. & I came home the outside temperature was thirty-five degrees and rising, so Tone told me he would feed the dogs and clean their pens, so I could stay inside and make sure when our pipes thawed out I could quickly turn off the water to the trailer, in case they started bursting.
I spent the next hour getting happier by the minute, as the temperature outside rose to forty-seven degrees as the sun shined brightly. I was literally on Cloud Nine when our toilets and bathtubs finally thawed out and once again became useful. Then twenty minutes later when the hot water started flowing—I was the happiest girl in the whole USA and could not wait to take a shower, instead of a sponge bath, and wash my hair! And then twenty minutes later when Tony came inside the trailer to eat lunch—everything went south and it wasn't T.'s fault that the hot water pipes burst under our trailer, so he ran outside to the pump-house and cut off our water supply.
To say the least—I was not a happy camper and I didn't complain much when Joni Daniels, the publisher of "Texas Animal Imprints" magazine arrived. After howdies and hugs, Tone took off for Medina to get plumbing supplies, as Joni and I drank coffee and caught up with each others news. We had a short, but fun visit and Joni was gone before T. arrived back at the ranch.
Around four-thirty Ellen & Charlie showed up to see if they could help us with our busted hot water pipes, as the sun disappeared behind the back of the trailer and the outside temperature began quickly dropping. Forty minutes later, they drove away, because there was nothing he could do, because we needed a special plumbing fitting and we couldn't get it until this morning. Then Aaron showed up to see if he could help us.
An hour later, near dark-thirty, after Aaron had crawled around under our trailer, he confirmed what Charlie had told us about needing the special fitting to fix things. So after thanking Aaron for trying to help us, too—he drove away and then we jumped in Kermit to go water the dogs and it was a little past seven o'clock when we returned to the trailer. And because we were both so tired—that is why I did not post a blog last night.
Today has been beautiful was the weather. By ten-thirty this morning—The Nellybelle was no longer a dysfunctional trailer, because we had hot and cold running water, as the sun shined brightly outside and our dogs basked in the warm, seventy degree weather.
Before I end tonight's post I am happy to say that we now have plenty of water inside and out, Tony and I have finally gotten to bath properly, washed our hair and thankfully, we no longer stink to high heaven, and thanks to Queen Bee & Airy Queen, we now have several loads of clean clothes and laundry and all of our dogs are doing great outside and looking forward to another warm day of seventy degrees. And as far as I am concerned, that Arctic blast is a blast from the past that I will never forget and hope to never see again.
P.S. Tomorrow is James Nash's birthday and I want to be the first to wish him a happy Birthday. even though I know it will be great because Carol loves him so much.

Zeus!
Y'all, I have been trying to write a blog tonight, but with the many interruptions on the Internet tonight and the rolling power outrages, due to the coldest weather that we have ever seen—I've given up.
Today has been a great day thanks to the kind comments made by Mari and 'Erb and for Charlie and Ellen Cooper, our Angel Neighbors, showing up this morning, to help us this morning, to feed the dogs, clean their pens and watering the dogs, and for the caring phone calls from Jon Wolfmueller, Rick, the friendly lighthouse keeper, down in Port Aransas and Joni, the publisher and my editor for the new, great magazine "Texas Animal Imprints."
As of this morning, Kinky's pipes are frozen and he has no water over at the Lodge, but fortunately, we have cold water, but no hot water. It has been a rough and hectic day today and it ain't over, yet. The temp right now is 19 degrees and dropping to 15 degrees by morning, but tomorrow it is supposed to warm up finally—thank goodness.
I have some super great news about Zeus being adopted out tomorrow, but I will tell you all about it tomorrow, when the sun comes out tomorrow, because I'm fixin' to go to bed now, because I'm doing Harley in the morning at 7:45.
Y'all have a great evening! And stay warm. Burr......I can't believe that people chose to live in this kind of weather, because I need the sun and it's warmth,

On The Cover Of Texas Animal Imprints!
Today has been great. This afternoon while we were in Kerrville, we stopped by Wolfmueller's Books to say hi to Sandy and Jon and to get them to sign Lynda's soup cookbook that she won in my contest, and to show off Tony's pictures on the cover and his beautiful pictures inside the Texas Animal Imprints January / February magazine!
When we arrived at the bookstore Jon greeted us from behind the checkout counter. "Where's Sandy?" Tony asked. "I bet she's out buying more books."
No, she's not out buying books today," Jon said. "She had to go home to pick up a book." Then we started laughing. "She should be here any minute..."
"Jon, I brought Lynda's cookbook to get y'all to sign it. And if you don't mind, keeping it here until Mari can swing by and sign it, before I mail it to Lynda."
"Sure, that's fine. We don't mind..."
"Well, Tony is becoming a famous photographer, Jon. Take a look at his beautiful picture on the cover of Texas Animal Imprints January / February magazine!" I said, as I handed the magazine to Jon, so he could look at it.
"And Joni, the publisher, also used one of Tone's pictures for Connie Strong's great story about my friend Cindy, when she interviewed her about her documentary "MANITOU-API: WHERE THE SUN RISES" and Tony also took these pictures of Pilgrim and Pumpkin for my column that I wrote! Isn't this great!" I bragged, as Jon quickly thumbed through the magazine to look at all of T.'s pictures.
"You're good, Tony. These are beautiful photos," Jon said, as Sandy walked in the back door and waved to us, before coming up to join us. "Sandy look at Tony's pictures..."
"I love these, Tony!" Sandy said. "Congratulations." Then Kathleen Keen walked in the front door. After greetings, Sandy handed the Texas Animal Imprints magazine to Kathleen and said, "Tony took these pictures..."
"Tony! I love your pictures, especially the one of the sunset."
"He took that one from our front porch," I said. "I love all of his pictures! And you can go online to read Texas Animal Imprints January / February magazine right now. Y'all will love Connie Strong's article about Cindy, too. And Kinky's column."
A few minutes later Kathleen had to take off and then some customers walked into the bookstore, so I looked at books while Sandy and Jon helped their customers. Before leaving their bookstore, I bought these two books about my hero, Mark Twain! And, I a can't wait to start reading them.
Around four o'clock today, I went over to the Lodge to show Kinky my new books, Grant and Twain: The Story Of A Friendship That Changed America by Mark Perry and Who Is Mark Twain by Mark Twain himself, that have never been published before! "I've got and already read Who Is Mark Twain, and it was good, but I would like to read this one."
"I'll loan it to you as soon as I finish reading it," I said, before we went to visit with The Friedmans in the big room.
Tonight, as soon as I finish writing this blog, I plan to start reading the Grant and Twain book. I am so happy for Tony about his photos being on the cover and in Joni's beautiful magazine, Texas Animal Imprints and I hope that you will subscribe to Joni Daniel's great magazine and check out the January / February issue online. And please read my column about...

They Grabbed Me!
Today has been so much fun even though Mercury in retrograde wreaked a little havoc right before sunset. This morning I got up real early so I could do my morning chores, walk with Leslie and get the trailer cleaned up, because my good friend, Joni Daniel, the Publisher of "Texas Animal Imprints" magazine, the one that I write a bi-monthly column for, was coming out to visit us around one-ish and I couldn't wait to see her!
Around eleven-thirty, while I was cooking our lunch the phone rang—it was Jon Wolfmueller. After we said our howdys to each other he started laughing and said, "Have you gotten your mail today?"
"No. Why?"
"We just got our mail and I wanted to tell you that we got the new Club Ed's 2011 Spring catalog of classes and you're in it!"
"What? Are you serious?" I asked, with excitement.
"Yes. When I picked up the catalog to look at it, I opened it up on page 55 and there was a picture of you and a short article about "Cousin Nancy Loves Club Ed" and I nearly fell out of my chair. It's a good picture of you and a great write-up by Phil Houseal—you're famous, Nancy..." Jon and I talked a few minutes more about how excited I was being featured in Club Ed's catalog and what a nice man Phil Houseal was, and before we hung up I thanked Jon for letting me know.
Then I went back to cooking and then the phone started ringing off of the wall—with friends and well wishers telling me that I was in the 2011 Club Ed catalog! To say the least, I was more than thrilled. Thank you, Phil—you made my day today and I am so honored that you included me in the catalog!
After lunch I walked two more miles with Leslie, to complete my total of eight miles walked today and then I cleaned up. An hour or so later Joni showed up in her cute, baby-blue colored VW Bug convertible, with her sister Julie!
As we drank coffee and nibbled on Ellen Jackson's delicious holiday cookies, inside the trailer, we caught up with each other's news and then we started talking about the magazine and the upcoming "Texas Animal Imprints" January/ February issue. And by the time that conversation ended—it looks like T. will have one of his beautiful pictures appear on the cover of "Texas Animal Imprints" magazine! I don't know who was more excited about it, but I think Tony was. I am so proud and happy for him. "Tony!" I said. "You're a professional photographer and can now brag that your pictures have appeared in magazine articles and on magazine covers, calendars and books, too. I love it!" T. blushed and said nothing, but I could tell that he was more than happy about it.
We had the best visit with Joni and Julie, even though it was too short, but there was so much laughing I had to take an Aspirin. After we went outside and visited with all of our rescued dogs—they told us that they had to leave and we hated to see them go.
After Julie and Joni left the rescue ranch, Tone printed out and showed me two pictures to get my opinion on them and I absolutely loved them—they grabbed me! And, when we went over to the Lodge to give Joni's gift to Kinky, we took the pictures with us for Kinky and Marcie to see and they thought they were beautiful, too! And here they are. The second one is of Little Jewford and Shalom on the ranch and I think these pictures look like paintings.

Feel Good!
As I begin to write this, Phoebe Snow is singing "Poetry Man," on Bozo, my iPod's Bose docking system. Salty Dog, my Himalayan salt lamp, is glowing and a fake fire is pretending to burn in Old Smokey, our electric, faux wood burning stove and here is a picture that I just took of them. It's cozy and I like that.
This is the picture that I took of the cover, but unfortunately Flash Gordon, my flash on my Sony camera, decided it wanted to become a part of the beautiful cover (near the bottom) and I also accidentally chopped off the top part and sides of Texas Animal Imprints—sorry Joni. Please tell Mary Chavoustie that I didn't give it the justice that it was due, but it is still beautiful.

Years ago, Tony and I bought Old Smokey, because we love wood burning fireplaces and also because fire is a four-letter word to people who live in old trailers—they don't mix well.
Johnny Rivers is now singing "Maybelline" and my foot won't quit tapping, next to Thunder's head, who is sound asleep. Now that the mood is set and perfect for me, I am ready to tell you about my incredibly, wonderful day.
This morning I got up real early and did my chores, because I had to walk eight miles with Leslie, because I have fallen way behind on my walking schedule, because of taking so much time off for my dental work, holidays etc.
So far, as of today I have officially walked 1,634 miles since January 1, 2010, which is great, but not good, because I am 36 miles behind and have to make it up this month so I can reach my goal of 1,825 miles walked this year with Leslie.
I figure if I walk eight miles for the next ten days straight—I will be able to accomplish my New Year's resolution easily.
After walking the walk I sat down at the kitchen table with a hot cup of Yerba Mate tea and checked my e-mails. And the one that I got from our friend Kim Galusha literally made my day! Kim wrote that she and Joe King Carrasco, the "King of Tex-Mex Rock & Roll," who did a benefit for our rescue ranch in 2008, at the Ruta Maya in Austin, have put together a fantastic CD of that night's concert, and they want to give 50% of the sells of the CD to Utopia! Talk about two nice people—we love them! And, when I told Kinky about Kim's news, he was as thrilled as we were. Thank you, Kim and Joe King Carrasco!
Well, I didn't think my day could get any better, but it did—real quick—when the snail mail arrived! "There here, Nance. Joni Daniel has sent you some extra copies of Texas Animal Imprints." T. said, as he handed me her stuffed envelope, which I ripped open, because I could not wait to see my very first magazine column that I had written—in PRINT!
"Look, Tony!" I half-hollered, with excitement. "Here it is! OMG! I love the way it looks and look at the beautiful, photo collage that Mary Chavoustie did and they gave you credit for your photos, too!" Tone looked. "I love it. Thanks to Joni, I'm now a "magazine columnist" and you're a "professional photographer" with your photos in a magazine, calendar and books!..."
After I had settled down, I read the magazine from front to cover and I totally enjoyed reading all of the stories—especially the one that my friend Connie Strong wrote about our rescue ranch, titled "Life On This Side Of The Rainbow Bridge." Thank you so much, Connie—Kinky, Tony and I loved it! You are an incredibly talented writer and I teared up when I read your column about us.
When I was done reading, I picked up the phone and called Joni to thank her for sending me the copies, so I could send them to friends. "Joni, the magazine looks beautiful and I love what Mary did and..." Before ending our conversation I told her that I was going to blog about it tonight and then I thanked her again and said, "The cover of the magazine is absolutely beautiful and I'm going to plug your magazine, too. It is the least that I can do to thank you."

My Finger Wouldn't Quit Bleeding!
Well, I guess that I am just lucky, because today has been a another wonderful day for me. This morning after I walked eight more miles with Leslie, I spent my morning doing paperwork, answering e-mails and returning many phone calls.
After lunch Tony and I went outside and started mowing the rescue ranch, so it will look beautiful for our 1st Annual Dog Adoption and Training Seminar this coming Saturday. Since T.'s back was out, he rode the riding lawn mower and I push-mowed for three hours and then I grabbed the Weedeater and did some trimming around the dog pens.
When we finished working outside we came inside the trailer and sweet Tony plucked fifty-four stickers that were stuck and embedded in my clothes. Thank you, Tone, even though you called me a stickler for yard work. I am thrilled with how much we accomplished outside today and hopefully by tomorrow we can finish it up in three hours or less.
Twenty-two minutes into our nightly Happy Hour, after I drank a glass of fine, red boxed wine and Tony had finished off his beer the phone rang at six forty-seven and I let Carlton take the call. "Nancy, Tony! Tony, Nancy! Please pick up the phone. This is Mary Chavoustie with Texas Animal Imprints magazine. Connie Strong and I are at your gate and it is closed. We have a present that we want to give to y'all..."
"Hello, Mary. How are you? You and Connie are at the gate?" I asked, puzzled that a cell phone was getting service out here.
"No, actually, we are calling you from Kinky's Lodge. Frank let us use Kinky's phone..." As soon as we hung up, Tony went outside and jumped into Kermit and took off to go open the gate for them.
Two minutes later Connie and Mary pulled up to the trailer, got out of Connie's car, wearing big grins on their faces as they always do, and then the hug-fest began. "We just finished interviewing Copper Love and we love her," Connie said. "What an interesting woman..."
"We couldn't resist coming out to see y'all since we were so close," Mary said.
"We have a present to give to you," Connie said, as she went over to her car and opened the back seat door. "Since we can't be here for your annual Dog's Thanksgiving Dinner we brought you this to help cook their dinner." Connie held up a large, shiny stock pot with a cute kitchen towel, two big wooden spoons and three pot holders attached to it by a ribbon. Tone and I grinned.
"OMG!" I said. "Thank y'all so much! I love it and we sure can use it. I swear, y'all are two of the sweetest women I know. I can't believe that you drove all of the way out here to bring us a present. I'm gonna go get my camera. I'll be right back."
When I came back outside—Tony shot us. Mary is on the left and Connie is on the right. Then Mary shot Tony and me with the pot.

We had a short, but really fun visit with these two super cool women and trust me, there was a lot of laughing. After I showed them my new teeth and told them about my whistling problem they complimented me and then we talked about their hilarious "bloody" trip to Walmart to buy our gift, after interviewing Copper. "Before checking out at Walmart we went to the Eye Care department to borrow a pair of scissors, so we could cut the ribbon and I cut my finger on a sharp edge under the lid handle and my finger started bleeding profusely." We all started laughing. "There was blood all over my clothes and jeans and my finger wouldn't quit bleeding," Connie continued. "So, we then went to the Customer Service department and I told them that I wasn't going to sue them, but they needed to remove the stock pot from their inventory, because of the sharp edge and that they needed to give me a Band Aid." Then she showed us her bandaged finger and we laughed. "Tomorrow I am going to call your friend Rick Reichenbach, "The Friendly Lighthouse Keeper" in Port Aransas and make a date to go interview him."
"Y'all are going to love Rick," I said. "I'll call him tonight. Hopefully, he will invite you to spend the night on the island. It is a totally awesome experience and..."
As the sun sank behind the mountain, knowing that they had a five hour drive ahead of them to get home, they told us that they had to leave, so we had another hug-fest and then we bid them farewell and wished them a safe trip home. "Please tell Joni that we send her our best," I half-hollered, as they drove away.
P.S. 'Erb Cares, I am sorry that I missed your phone call last night. I love you and Karen and please give her and y'all's five dogs a hug from me.
