A Room With A View!

This past Wednesday, Tony received a surprise package in the mail from The NoMADS! They had sent Tony a note along with the cutest Blue Heeler stuffed toy! It made Tony smile and I teared up. We love The NoMADS! Here is their note:

“The NoMADS especially those with Australian Cattle Dogs/ Heelers don’t think your lives are complete without an ACD/ Heeler! So sorry to read about Blue, so this guy’s for you!”

Thursday, was a great day! After taking care of rescue ranch business, I painted the front porch and got most of it done, even though it was hotter than hot! During a break, I also took care of something that I had postponed since a week ago Friday.

On May 2nd, our friend Brian Kanof, had driven out from El Paso, so he could attend our Fredericksburg Bonefit. He arrived around 3:00 with his better half—Jackie. Kinky invited us over to have a visit with them before leaving for Fredericksburg. Tony was busy building me a table for the screened in porch, so I went over to the Lodge.

During the visit, outside by the Friedman Family Bone Orchard, there was much laughter; until Brian asked me to come into the Lodge, because he had something serious to discuss with me.

In the kitchen Brian told me some sad news. Keech, the cat that he had adopted from us—years ago, had passed away from old age, and then we both teared up. Then he handed me an envelope, with a picture of Keech on the front of it. Brian then asked me if I could spread Keech’s ashes for him somewhere on the ranch and I told him that I would take care of it.

Thursday, when I opened up the envelope—there were no ashes in it. Instead, I found a kind note about Keech from the veterinary clinic, a clay cast of Keech’s footprint, with Keech’s name painted on it, and a copy of “The Rainbow Bridge.”

I had planned to scatter the ashes around Yoda’s grave, but since there were no ashes I put the clay cast next to the Eternal Squirrel, said some kind words about Keech, and then went back to painting.

Later that evening, I cooked my brother Ron’s latest new recipe, that he had concocted. It was fast, easy and delicious! And, Ben, Tony and I loved it! I’ve named it “Cousin Nancy’s PDQ—BBQ!” And, here it is:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees, turn on your iPod and crank up the volume.

Take skinless, boneless chicken thighs, and pound the heck out of them, using your kitchen hammer. Then place two thinly sliced strips of jalapenos in the middle of the thigh, roll it up and then wrap it with a strip of bacon—insert toothpicks. Cook for 45 minutes. Remove pan from the oven, crank oven up to broil, then generously pour BBQ sauce over the thighs, and put back into oven for 5-10 more minutes. Put “Sitting Here In Limbo” on by the Grateful Dawg and enjoy!

P.S. Serve with salad. Beer or Wine optional.

After we had eaten our dinner, we went outside to the screened in porch and had a great visit. One of our topics was— what name we should give to our new porch. Kinky had been bugging me about giving it a name, and I’m thinking of calling it “The Bunkhouse,” but Ben pointed out that there were no beds in it. I’m now thinking it should be called “Our Space,” “Outer Space,” or “A Room With A View!”

Friday morning, Kinky called to tell me, that an Israeli film crew, sent by the largest television network in Israel, was coming out at 9:00, to interview him and then me, for some documentary. That was not good news, because I needed to go to Kerrville. Thank goodness, the film crew was an hour late, because after interviewing Kinky—they had run out of time, and had to leave.

At 12:30, Tony and I took off for Kerrville. We decided to eat lunch first at La Fours, before running our errands. When we pulled into their parking lot—Kinky’s car was there, and we parked right next to it, and then we went inside. Kinky laughed out loud and so did we when our eyes met. He was with Jerome. He waved for us to join them, and we did. Great lunch—great visit!

(Wow! This blog is turning into a book—my fingers are killin’ me! I promise, that I am nearly done.)

This morning, at 5:00, Kinky called, just as Tony was fixing to call him—to invite us over for some coffee, before heading up to Austin, to hop a plane to Arkansas, for a lecture he was giving tonight. “Sorry,” Tony apologized. “Nance and I are pretty busy right now, getting Sheba, Orion and Dennis Hopper ready. They are getting picked up by Charlie and Ellen, who are taking them to the airport, and they will be here at 6:00.”

By 5:30, Tony and I had everything under control—we were ready. So, I called Kinky and then went over to the Lodge for a cup of coffee and a quick visit. At 6:00, it was time for Kinky to leave and for me to get back over to the rescue ranch.

When I arrived, the outside lights and two pair of headlights were on! While Tony and Charlie were loading the dogs into their crates, I gave all of the paperwork to Ellen and then visited for a few minutes. They left here at 6:15 and the sun had not even come up, yet. Then Tony took off for the Old Timer.

Around 8:00 this morning, I was ready for a nap, but instead I cooked my famous “Cousin Nancy’s Cowboy Breakfast,” which I stole from somebody. Ten minutes later, Ben showed up and so did Tony! We chowed down while listening to Ruthie Foster—singing her heart out! At 8:15, Ellen called to tell me that the dogs had made it to San Antonio, and were on their way to The Windy City! That news made my morning! I was happy!

Happy to know that our dogs were on their way, and that we all had survived my cooking, and no one had died from eating it this morning! After putting their dishes into the sink—the guys went to work outside, and left me to clean up the kitchen. When that chore was completed, I e-mailed Kristine Banks to let her know the dogs were on their way.

John came to work early, and Ben left here around 11:00 to go see his parents, Karen and Rob Welch, up in Mason, and to spend Mother’s Day with them—tomorrow.

It’s now fifteen minutes past twelve, and I am blogged-out! Y’all have a great Saturday, and Happy Mother’s Day!

P.S. Thanks Mari, for letting me know where to check out that movie starring Kinky, Mel Tillis, Roy Clark, Robert Earl Keen and Kevin Fowler—palopintogold.com/trailer
