Episode 19: Remembering The Alamo With Fourth Coates! or Duck And Cover!

Today has been a blast, because I was lucky enough to interview my and Tony's dear friend Fourth Coates. And you can see why we love Fourth so much by listening to this entertaining interview with Fourth telling one funny story after another. And with me often cutting in to tell a few jokes.

Fourth kept Tony and I laughing with his hilarious stories about growing up on a ranch, in South Texas.

One More Rule!

This morning I received an e-mail from Denise and two from Kris concerning our 30 Day Food Challenge.

Denise wrote us that she realized that yesterday she broke the diet, because she ate onion rings, at Po Po restaurant. But the good news is she is re-starting it today.

The first e-mail Kris sent to Denise and me made me laugh out loud and it was great news for me. She suggested that we add one more rule to our 30 Day Food Challenge—"It's okay to fall off the wagon every once in a while."

The second e-mail that Denise and I received from Kris was a challenge to me. Kris was asking me to start doing this diet with her, on October 1st and that made me burst out laughing, because I literally had two of (Carol's) Cousin Nancy's Ultimate Chocolate Sheet Cakes baking, in the oven.

So I wrote Kris and Denise a short e-mail declaring how much I LOVED Kris' new added rule. Then I told Kris that I was going to start doing this 30 Day Food Challenge today, because I had two delicious, chocolate sheet cakes baking, in the oven.

And after I wrote them back. I pulled the two cakes out of the oven, frosted them and added the pecan pieces. Then I called Kinky to let him know that I had baked Carol's, I mean my delicious chocolate sheet cake and that one of them had his name on it. And he seemed to be delighted with my news until I told him, "But I can't bring it over until later this afternoon."

Around 11:30 Tony and I met Kris & Jim and Kay for lunch, at the Medina Highpoint Resort's Koyote Grill. Of course the food was delicious and we did a lot of laughing. And the best part was we ate my chocolate sheet cake for dessert. And Tony gave away the rest of this delicious, famous cake to our good friends that work, at the Medina Highpoint Resort.

After our fun lunch, Kay and Kris & The Mineral Man followed us, over to our property, to check out all of the new things we've done over there. And quite frankly—they all seemed to be pretty impressed.

When Tony and I got back home, I called Kinky to let him know that we were back and then I asked him if it was a good time for us to bring his cake over to him.

Two minutes later, Tony and I took off, for the Lodge, in JJ Cale, to make a special delivery, but we got intercepted, by a good friend, as soon as the rescue ranch gate had closed behind us. It was Fourth Coates. And after we had greeted each other we invited Fourth to follow us, over to Kinky's, because he and Kinky are good friends, too.

Within one minute of our arrival, Fourth and Kinky were sitting down, at the kitchen table, eating my/his mouth-watering, chocolate sheet cake.

We had a really fun visit with Kinky and Fourth, in Kinky's kitchen and we must have stayed, over at the Lodge, for at least forty-five minutes. And the whole time that we were over there Kinky kept nibbling away on his cake. And that is about it for tonight.

Y'all have a great evening and keep on laughing!

My Recipe!

Today has been great, but yesterday was even better for several reasons. After Brandon, Rick, Tony and I ate lunch I asked Brandon to take a break, so he and I could mess around with my Garage Band software and record him playing and singing some of the awesome songs that he has written.

In minutes, Brandon was sitting at the kitchen table, adjusting the settings on my Yeti microphone, that I purchased a few years ago, so I could make my second book an audio book. But I ended up scraping that idea, because Ben and Tony kept making me laughing, etc., but mainly because of my thick North Texas accent, which made me sound like a country hick.

After I showed Brandon how to record himself, he filled The Cabin with beautiful music. While he recorded one song after another two very nice women showed up, because they wanted to meet us and see our rescue ranch. Tony and I really liked Patti and Laura and because they had driven all of the way from Killeen, Texas we gave them the grand tour. Then the four of us went into Outer Space and had a really fun visit.

Around 2:30 after they had left, Rick and Tony took off in Trigger to get groceries at the H-E-B on Highway 16, while Brandon continued to record and figured out how to use special sound effects to improve the quality of his recordings.

When Rick and Tony arrived back at the ranch they put up the groceries, because Brandon and I were busy burning his songs to a CD for him. While I was syncing my iPod with Brandon's songs, so we could play them for Karon and Dalton, Tony showed Rick how to make bacon-wrapped bananas, because we had invited Karon and her son Dalton to come over for a visit and appetizers, before taking Brandon back home.

When Rick and Tony went outside to heat up our new Char-Broil Tru-infared grill, Stacie and her eight-year-old son, also named Brandon, arrived to officially adopt Molly Brown. After Stacie filled out The Unsinkable Molly Brown's adoption form Tone and I jumped into Kermit and they followed us in their big truck, down to Molly's and Rocky's pen.

When Molly saw little Brandon jump out of their truck, she knew that she was getting adopted and she could not quit wagging her tail and jumping up and down, which made it difficult for Tony to put a leash on her. When she came out of her pen she pulled Tony to Brandon and began kissing Brandon. I took these two pictures of Brandon with his new best friend, as Karon and Dalton pulled up.

After we had adios-ed Stacie, her sweet, happy little boy and Molly, one super lucky dog, we drove back to The Okay Corral, so Tony could cook the bacon-wrapped bananas, which Rick was already hesitant about tasting.

While everyone sat around waiting for the delicious treats to finish cooking, I went up to The Cabin, grabbed my iPod and the portable Bose docking system and returned to The Okay Corral, so everyone could listen to Brandon's very first recorded music and they loved it. And Rick loved, "Tony's Bacon-Wrapped Bananas," my recipe that Tone stole from me, that I stole from my girlfriend's father, forty-seven-years ago, when I was in the eighth grade.

As our friends enjoyed eating the appetizers we tried to come up with a perfect name for the adorable little pup, because I decided Babe Ruth wasn't such a good name after all. Rick suggested, Patches. Dalton and Brandon came up with several funny names, but as of today he still hasn't been officially named, because I want his name to be very special, because he is such a special little puppy.

As I finish typing this, this adorable, little one-eyed Beagle/Heeler pup is sleeping in his crate, about one foot away from me, probably dreaming about the day when we will finally remove his Victorian collar, that he has to wear to protect his healing eyelid.

If any of y'all know of some super dog-loving friend that might want to adopt him please tell them to call me. He is thirteen-weeks-old, neutered, wormed and has had his1st puppy shots and rabies shot and  he is very smart, because we have already house-trained him.

Rick left early this morning after he and Tony returned from drinking coffee at The Old Timer, in Medina. Around noon today, my throat started feeling sore and scratchy and now I am coughing regularly, so I guess I caught whatever 3-4 day coughing deal that Tony has just gotten over and what Rick had when he arrived here on Friday. Fortunately, neither one of them never had fever or felt bad, except for a nagging cough. So, at least I know it is not the dreaded flu.

And that is about it for today, except for one more time wishing our dear friend Fourth Coates a happy birthday.

Y'all have a great evening!

Happy Birthday Fourth Coates!

Today is our dear friend, Fourth Coates birthday. Tony and I were invited to his surprise birthday party last night, but unfortunately we didn't get to go, because Tony has been nursing a bad cough for four days and he did not want to go and expose our old friends to it.

Earlier in the week we had picked up Fourth's birthday present and card. Because Fourth had given me a bottle of his favorite wine, Quatro, for my birthday, we decided to give him a bottle of Cowgirl Sisterhood Wine. And we used my last foil pot pie pan and made him a sports model, alien-attracting helmet, because in my fiction novella he and his wife, Lynda, have Alien-fever and they wear them.

This morning as I write this, Rick and Tony are at the Old Timer drinking coffee and hopefully Fourth will show up, so Tony can give Fourth his birthday presents. "Happy Birthday, Fourth! We love you."

Fourth!

Today has been great, because I more or less took the morning off, to stop, shoot and smell the beautiful wildflowers that Tony planted for me, a while back. Here are a couple of my shots.

Because I was feeling a little guilty about not helping T. with the morning chores, I treated him to lunch, in Kerrville, before we ran a few errands.

After lunch, while I was standing in line at the Post Office I heard a man half-holler, "Hey, there's Reverend Cousin Nancy!" So, I turned around and saw this tall, dressed up cowboy, about twenty feet away, walking towards me and then I realized it was our dear friend Fourth—then I immediately started blushing, because everyone in the Post Office, including the postal people, were staring at me and smiling and most likely wondering, "Who the heck is Reverend Cousin Nancy?"

After Fourth and I had hugged each other, we visited for a couple of minutes. When Fourth and I adios-ed each other and he had walked away to go retrieve his mail, there was a gentle tap on my right shoulder, so I turned around to see who it was. "I'm sorry to bother you, Reverend Cousin Nancy? When I overheard your friend call you reverend and since I'm new in town," a shy, young woman, probably in her early thirties, says to me, "anyway, since you are a reverend, I was wondering if you could help me out and recommend a good summer vacation Bible school for my children to attend."

(I couldn't help but chuckle and think to myself, "Why me, Lord? It seems that every time that I come into this particular post office something weird always happens to me." Then if He would have answered me back, He would have probably said, "It's Fourth's fault.")

"Yes, I just became a reverend, but I can't really help you out, because I only marry and bury people." As I walked away to go up to the counter to mail my package—she looked more than confused and Tony and I laughed about it all of the way home.

This afternoon Carol called me and she was laughing when she jokingly said, "I read your blog about Tony saying your Freata was so much better than my Frittata, so please tell Mr. T. that the next time y'all come over here to eat, tell him I said—BYOL, bring your own lunch kit, if he wants anything to eat over here." And that is about it for tonight.

Y'all have a great evening!
