Matt-the-Hatter!

Yesterday was a really great day even though it never stopped raining and ended with some thunderstorms. While Tony and Ben sloshed around outside I walked six miles even though I was really tired because I hadn't slept much the night before.

The reason that I did not sleep well was because I worried about doing a reality show out here. I really liked Karuna and I didn't want to hurt her feelings, but something inside me said, "Don't do it" and I always listen to my heartstrings.

After I walked, I went over to the Lodge to talk to Kinky about the TV show and I told him my thoughts and concerns. Thirty minutes later Kinky told me he was fine with any decision I made about it so I came home and called a few Board members and talked to them about the reality show. Then I talked to my sister Cindy and Ben about it and the "don't do it" votes outnumbered the "do it" votes.

I felt bad about telling Karuna the news for at least ten minutes and then I forgot all about it because Ian showed up to adopt Scooby Doo! Since it was raining cats and dogs outside we invited Ian to come inside the trailer to fill out the adoption papers on the little dog that stole his heart a few weeks back. Ian was so excited about finally adopting Scoober he could not wait to go outside in the rain to get his new best friend and take him home. "Last night my girlfriend went to the pet store and bought him dog food, feed dishes, a collar, leash and a ton of toys to play with!" Ian said before he and Tony went to get Scooby Doo.

When Tone came back inside the trailer I was making lunch for Ben, Tone and me and he was soaked from head to toe, but he was wearing a big smile on his face. "Scooby was so excited to see Ian. I know Scooby knew that he was getting his forever home, Nance. He's a lucky dog and I'm so glad that it was Ian who adopted him. He is such a nice young man."

After lunch with the guys I returned several e-mails and phone calls, then I got depressed about having to call Karuna and tell her that we had to decline her TV show offer. I hate it when I have to say no to people as nice as Karuna, but I knew I had to so I put it off for an hour and took an "arts and crafts break" to cheer me up.

Last week when Tony and I went over to visit our friends Barbara and Tom Carpenter at their beautiful ranch I fell in love with the way Barbara had decorated their cozy home because it was "Country" style and full of love, history and character. When I spotted her painted, pastel pink Scrabble letters and trays scattered throughout their ranch house with words like: relax, welcome etc. I told her that I wanted to copy her idea, she told me to do it and I did sort of.

While I was painting (white washing) the lettered and numbered tiles baby pink I decided to do my words in "Pig Latin" because as a child Ronnie and I used to talk Pig Latin in front of our parents and we thought that we were so smart, thinking that they could not understand us—it was our secret language. Mom and Dad never let on that we might not be the sharpest tools in the tool shed because they were too nice.

For those of you who are too young to know what Pig Latin is I will tell you. In Ronnie's and my secret foreign language we removed the first letter of a word and put it at the end of the word and added "ay" to it. For example: Ronnie became Onnie-Ray. Here is a picture of a few of my trays of words.

After I cleaned up my mess in the kitchen I called Karuna to tell her the bad news. She was so sweet even though I could tell that she was really disappointed and I felt terrible for twenty minutes after we hung up. Then I forgot about it because we had another fantastic adoption! R-1 found his new forever home! And it was raining so hard Tony, Ben and I got soaked as we stood outside in the rain visiting with Tony's friend Bo.

After the adoption papers were signed inside the barn R-1 happily jumped into the front seat of Bo's fancy truck and layed down as we visited in the pouring rain. After ten minutes of talking I said, "I can't help it. I've got to check on R-1 and make sure that he is okay." Then we all walked up to the window and looked inside the pickup—R-1 was sound asleep and seemed to be hugging the cloth seat because he loves to ride in trucks and cars! "I want this dog to go everywhere that I go." Bo said.

When it was time for Bo to leave with his new precious cargo R-1 was happily riding shotgun on the passenger side of the front seat which made Ben, Tony and me laugh.  Then the three of us jumped into Trigger and returned to the trailer and talked about how happy we were for Scooby Doo and R-1. And we could not believe that they had been adopted in the pouring rain. Then the thunder storms came and it rained all night.

This morning when I got up at six-fifteen (which would have been five-fifteen in the old time) I let the dogs outside and the roaring creek below our bluff was so loud I figured that we must have flooded sometime during the night. Then Tony walked into the big room and told me that he wasn't going to try to go to the Old Timer this morning because the creeks and river were reportedly out of banks. I heard on the news that they had to evacuate all of the campers in Bandera. I don't know if we are land-locked or not."

After I made some coffee and fed the dogs the sun came up over the mountain and we could see our rain guage. We got over five inches of rain since yesterday. After we drank a cup of coffee T. and I jumped into Buttermilk to go check out the low water crossings.

The creeks were full and out of their banks but we were not land-locked yet so went over to the Lodge because I wanted to tell Kinky about the creeks rising. Kinky was up and dressed when we walked into the Lodge and he was a little surprised to see us at seven-fifteen in the morning. We had a long discussion about the weather because Kinky and Frank had to leave by eight o'clock for a librarian convention in San Antonio that he was going to speak at. "They said that we have a ninety percent chance of rain today and if I were you I'd get out of here before the creeks rise some more," I said.

Ten minutes later Tone and I were back at the trailer. I decided to invite Kinky, Frank, Ben and Will over for breakfast so I called the Lodge and got Kink's machine which probably meant that they had taken off for San Antone. "Kinky! Ben if you are there please pick..."

"Hello, Nancy," Ben said. "Kinky and Frank just left..."

"Would you and Will like to come over for breakfast? I'm fixin' scrambled eggs, beans and sausage."

Ten minutes later Ben showed up and he ate breakfast with us while Will caught up on some over do sleep. After breakfast the guys put on their rain gear and galoshes and then went outside to work in the rain and that's when I decided to walk six miles with Leslie.

Around eleven-fifteen Tony walked inside the trailer and told me that Lisa was still really depressed and she wanted to talk to me about it. "Tell her to come on up," I said. Tony went back outside to tell Lisa to come inside. When Lisa walked inside the trailer Tony walked outside. I could tell that she had been crying so I hugged her and invited Lisa to sit down so we could talk.

Three minutes into our private conversation the front door opened and in walked Tony and a good-looking cowboy wearing a straw cowboy hat—it was Matt! "Matt! I love your cowboy hat! You look so handsome! Doesn't he, Lisa?"

"Yes, he does," Lisa said trying to smile. "You look good, Matt." Matt blushed.

"Has it helped you get any new girlfriends?" I teased.

"Yeah," Matt said with a laugh. "Yesterday some girl hollered out her car window at me and screamed, "Forget the horse. Ride a cowboy!" but she was a cowgirl and fatter than a cow..."

"Don't give up, Matt-the-Hatter," I said. "When you meet some cute girl tip the front of your cowboy hat at her and she will melt and then say things like..." Ten minutes later after Lisa, Tony and I had coached and given Matt tips on how to be and act like a cowboy we were all laughing—including Lisa! Yeah! Here is a picture I took of Matt with his new improved image. Doesn't he look adorable!

When it was time for Lisa and Matt to leave Matt did the funniest thing. After he and Lisa left the trailer he picked her up on the front porch and threw her over his shoulder and then carried her down the steps with her laughing and screaming, "Put me down, Matt! I am going to get you for this. Matt! I'm serious now..."

So Tony, Ben and me went out on the porch to watch. "Matt!" I hollered as he carried her off towards her car. "I've got a roping rope if you need one!" Then we started laughing and came back inside the trailer.

After turning on my iPod I made lunch for Ben, Tony, Will and me. After lunch I cleaned up the kitchen I asked Tony to get our expensive-hardly-ever-used vacuum sealer out of our closet because I couldn't reach it because I was going to cut up the giant Miles of Chocolate brick that Ben had given to us yesterday, so I could store it in smaller serving packages.

When I was ready to start vacuum sealing I had a hard time trying to cut up the huge brick of chocolate because I am not good with knives so Ben took over. We started an assembly line. As Ben sliced off a chunk of chocolate I would cut off a seven or eight inch sheet of the plastic sealing bag. Then Ben would seal one edge of the plastic bag and then insert the other edge into the vacuum sealer and then vacuum seal it as Tony and Will watched and teased us. Here is a picture of a vacuum sealed slice of the best chocolate in the world. Thank you, Ben!

Kinky just called. When the phone rang I looked up at the Caller ID on the wall and recognized Kinky's cell number so I picked up the phone and said, "Howdy!" instead of "Rescue Ranch," like I always do. It threw Kinky and he laughed. "Howdy!"I said again and he laughed harder and then he echoed back my words. He called to tell me that he and Frank are headed back to the ranch and he wanted to get a "how high's the water" creek-check and then he told me that he had fun at the librarian convention.

P.S. I want to do a big shout out to my friend and author, Cindy Lou Ruffino, who will be signing her second book Dead X's In Texas tomorrow from ten until three o'clock at the Georgetown Convention Center! Cindy, I hope that you have fun tomorrow and your book sells like hot cakes! You Rock!

Y'all have a great evening!

Wednesday, Go To Lake Clothes!

This morning, Cindy Lou Ruffino, sent me a few pictures of the wonderful dog, Bridgett Bardot, that she adopted from us last Wednesday, with Bridgett's new best friend, Mater! Cindy and her 'kids' went for a swim at Lake LBJ this morning, and they had a great time in the water! I love their outfits! Mater is the Boston and Bridgett is the drop dead gorgeious one! Besides Cindy Lou being a fantastic author, she can add clothes-dog to her list of many accomplishments! I can't wait for Kinky to see these pictures!

The Purple Pair!

Yesterday was once again, great! Cindy Lou Ruffino and her friend, Sharon H. drove down for a visit and also so Cindy Lou could give Kinky, Tony and me a copy of her new book, Out of the Texas Mist! They arrived around ten-thirty, and we had a wonderful visit, in Outer Space, for several hours! As usual, there was plenty of laughter, too.

After our visit, Tony and I gave them our grand tour of the trailer. Sharon loved our trailer, especially the painted rugs on the floor. Also, our dogs fell in love with Cindy Lou and Sharon and would not leave them alone—until we left the trailer to show them the rescue ranch, but more importantly— Bridgett Bardot.

Cindy Lou had seen Bridgett on our web site: utopiarescue.com and she was pretty certain that she wanted to adopt Bridgett and take her home! Her Boston Terrier, Mater, needed a companion!

While Tony showed them the ranch, I stayed behind, to fill out the adoption forms on Bridgett, just in case Cindy Lou wanted to adopt her. When I filled out the adoption form, I had my fingers crossed, and that made it very difficult for me to write legibly—but it was worth it and sorta readable!

When I met up with them, Bridgett was licking Cindy Lou’s face! They were best friends and even wearing matching outfits—purple shirt—purple collar! “I want her!” Cindy Lou said.

“That’s fantastic, but remember, if it doesn’t work out—we will gladly take her back,” I said.

“Oh no,” Cindy Lou said. “Adopting Bridgett Bardot is a lifetime commitment. She won’t be coming back.”

Cindy Lou quickly filled out the adoption contract, and then it was time for them to leave. When she loaded up Bridgett Bardot into Sharon’s van—Bridgett quickly sat down on the back seat—and she was ready to go! Goodbye rescue ranch!

We then said our goodbyes, hugged each other, and then they drove away, with one very happy dog in the back seat! Tony and I were thrilled with the adoption! This is a picture I took of Bridgett Bardot a few months ago.

I have just started reading Cindy Lou’s book, Out of the Texas Mist and I am having trouble putting it down! It’s a great mystery and Kinky, her hero, is a character in it, too, which even makes it more fun to read! Cindy Lou is a great writer and I love her voice. I feel like I am right there with her and Kinky.

The ISBN is: 1-60563-916-8 and you can order it from Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble or go to cindylouruffino.com

I must go now, to return a few phone calls, and then I plan to hopefully, finish Out of the Texas Mist tonight!

P.S. IT HAS BEEN RAINING HERE ALL DAY!!!!! YEAH!

Well, Excuse Me!

This morning, I woke up at 5:30. After feeding the dogs and the cat, I decided that I would bake ‘Cousin Nancy’s Miracle Bread’—a recipe that I stole from an old friend of mine, that I have since tweaked and re-tweaked, over the many years, since the recipe robbery.

Tony named it ‘Cousin Nancy’s Miracle Bread,’ because it is the only bread, that I have ever made—that hasn’t wound up being used as a doorstop or an anchor! My Miracle Bread actually tastes great and is very healthy. It is almost completely organic. I use organic: raisins, honey, oats, flax seeds, ground whole wheat flour, cinnamon, yeast, pecans, butter, sea salt and water.

After loading all of the secret ingredients into my bread machine, I plugged it into the wall, and it went to work. Before checking my e-mail, I turned on my Bose iPod deck, put it on shuffle, and then cranked it up. As the Buffalo Springfield began singing, ‘For What It’s Worth,’ I poured a cup of Paul Newman’s Organic Coffee into my new mug, which I love. Now, I was ready to sit down at my laptop to check my mail.

As they harmoniously sang, ‘Something’s happening here,’ the bread machine churned and chugged—in perfect rhythm. It was exactly what I needed, and it kneaded. My first e made me smile. It was from my good friend Carol V., the dog walker, who volunteers out here and who has been in Outer Space with Tony and me. Carol wrote:

‘I bought some Miles of Chocolate in Denver, Colorado yesterday. Ben is a nationwide company! And, I love his chocolate! I hope all is well at home. It's mid 70's here in the day and 50's at night. Perfect! I'm ready to come home though. I miss my doggies and your doggies too!’

Since it was already 84 degrees in Outer Space, I wrote her back a note, recommending that she stay up there, and that I would be glad to bring her dogs up there. I am still waiting to hear from her—I’m packed!

My next note was from one of my favorite authors, N. M. Kelby. It made me smile, too. She wrote:

‘We've been having thousands of visitors to my site, so I linked to you w/ a blog. If you have a jpeg business card for the ranch, I can put that on my "information page" under "cool stuff".

Here's the blog link:

Hope all is well!

Wow, now I know what it is like to be blogged about! I checked out her blog immediately, and it too made me smile, as I listened to Phoebe Snow singing, ‘Poetry Man.’ I wrote Nicole a short note, thanking her for her sweet blog, along with our logo attachment, and I also told her—how much I had enjoyed reading, ‘Murder at The Bad Girls Bar & Grill.’

My third e was from another author friend of mine—Cindy Lou Ruffino. And, it too, made me smile. Cindy Lou wrote:

Nancy,
WOOO WHOOO!
I feel like I'm on a magic carpet ride. ‘Out of the Texas Mist’ is available on-line at Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com and at my publishers website http://publishamerica.com! When I came in from work today I had an e-mail that read your press releases have been sent to your media contacts. I was floored. I have been waiting to see my first book in print for quite awhile. I am amazed at how great it feels to have one of your dreams come true. The press release follows this little short note.

‘I want to thank you for your encouragement and friendship and thank you for helping me get the word out. I'll have to decorate a cake for you at work and bring it by on one of my days off. Would that be white, marble or chocolate? Butter-cream or non dairy whipped? lol

Who could believe that a scary dream that had me gasping for air and holding onto the headboard could end up as a mystery novel and be published. I remember waking from that dream my heart pounding in my chest gasping for air and saying "What in the heck was that?"

I remember sitting at work at the little tables by the deli and writing on my breaks and before work. I remember people asking me what I was doing and shyly saying writing a murder mystery. I remember having to hide it because of some of my co-workers sneaking my little purple notebook and reading as I wrote. The funny part was trying to explain who Kinky was and why I was dreaming about him to the younger girls I worked with—then getting teased about it. Now when everyone ask me when is your book coming out, I can say just go on line and order it. Okay here are the particulars:

PublishAmerica Presents Out of the Texas Mist by Cindy Lou Ruffino

Frederick, MD June 16, 2008 -- PublishAmerica is proud to present Out of the Texas Mist by Cindy Lou Ruffino of Granite Shoals, Texas.

“After waking up in a strange vehicle, Cindy realizes that she is in danger. Using her head, she escapes then runs for her life through the dark woods. Waking the next morning in a mist-covered field, she ends up on the doorstep of a familiar-looking man with no idea who she is or where she is at.

With the help of this nice cowboy she finds out who she is, then finds out that she landed at the doorstep of her favorite author, Kinky Friedman. Together they try to find her kidnapper to clear her name once her cell phone is found in the hand of a badly mutilated woman. Once they discover the mutilated woman is just one of several, they begin to discover body after body as they get closer to finding the killer.

Cindy Lou Ruffino grew up in Houston, Texas. ‘Out of the Texas Mist,’ which started from a dream, was written on a spiral notebook before work and during breaks at her neighborhood Kroger, where she worked in the deli. Cindy lives with her Boston Terrier in the Texas Hill Country.”

Thanks so much for everything. Love ya, Cindy Lou’

As Willie Nelson sang, ‘Far Away Places,’ I wrote Cindy Lou a note from Outer Space, telling her how happy I was for her, and that I could not wait to read her book.

At 7:45 this morning—while Steve Martin was singing, ‘King Tut,’ two exciting things happened at the exact same time! Right when the bread machine buzzer announced that my miracle loaf was ready—Tony walked inside the trailer, wearing a big smile on his face, and carrying, in his hand, three Heirloom-Organic Serrano Peppers—which he had grown! Our first peppers!

While Steve sang, ‘He ate a crocodile. He gave his life—for tourism. Tut—Tut. Tut—Tut. Golden idle. Tut—Tut. Tut—Tut. Tut—Tut. He’s an Egyptian...’ I grabbed my camera! I quickly dumped out my miracle bread onto the cutting board and then placed Tony’s three peppers beside it. Snap!

‘King Tut. He could have won a Grammy. King Tut. Buried in his jammies...’

The phone rang. It was Kinky! And, we had a short conversation. As Stephen Stills began singing, ‘You Can’t Catch Me,’ the phone rang, again. It was Woody! He was calling to tell me that he and Rose would be coming out tomorrow for a visit, and he asked me to please tell Tony, “To start practicing, because ‘California Dreamin’’ was fixin’ to come out, and show him how real pool is played!’

Tony laughed when I gave him Woody’s message and he just shook his head. We can’t wait to meet Rose, and catch up with Woody, tomorrow! The Medina Bulldog Rules—at least for now!

Thank You Very Much!

This morning has been great! After feeding my six dogs, Mama, Abbie, Thunder, Toto, Little Girl and Hank, and then Lucky, our three-legged cat, I made some coffee, and then went out on our new screened-in deck to enjoy my first cup of coffee for the day.

I just love our new deck, that my incredibly great big brother, Ron and my nephew, Tom— built for us! Decorating it has been a lot of fun for me, and I am nearly done with it, and I will have pictures to share soon.

After breakfast with Tony, I decided to check my e-mails. As always, there were numerous letters and spams, but the last two e-mails, made my day! The first one, was from our great friend Carl. He wrote to tell me that he had to cancel his visit with us because he had some business that needed his attention. At the end of his note, he attached a beautiful picture of a rose in his garden—that he had named—Nancy! Wow, that is too cool!

The second e-mail was from our friend Dr. Kim G., who donated the agility equipment to us, a few months back. Well, she is putting on a dynamite Benefit for us, on June 6th, at 8:30 pm, at the Ruta Maya Coffee House & Organic Coffee Importing, up in Austin, featuring—Joe King Carrasco, who we love! Anyway, Kim wrote to tell us that the web site, promoting the upcoming benefit, was now ready for us to post!

Here is the site for the event: http://www.myspace.com/utopiabenefitjoeking

The site is fantastic! Please check out the site and near the bottom of the page they did the coolest slideshow of our dogs!

Thank you, Carl Naylor, Kim and Joe King Carrasco! We love y’all!

I’m fixing to go to Kerrville to get some paint for our front porch!

P.S. Cindy Lou, I hope your move to Granite Shoals went well!

Sleepless in Medina!

Greetings everyone! It’s official—we’re all well! Being sick makes me sick! I just can’t stand it.

Yesterday afternoon, we had fun. Our friend, Cindy Lou Ruffino, author and artist, came to see us, all the way from Spring, Texas—along with her son, Josh and his better half—Elizabeth. Cindy Lou had three reasons to come to the rescue ranch. One—to meet us in person and to see our rescue ranch. Two—to give me the cement plaque that she had made for Yoda’s grave. Three—to pick up John Kemmerly's autographed book, ‘Velma the Vomiting Vulture’— signed by him to her new grandson, Jamie!

When they arrived, the first thing Cindy Lou did—was to give me Yoda’s custom grave marker, and I absolutely loved it! In fact, it actually looks just like her—not Cindy Lou—Yoda! After that we all came inside the trailer and had a brief visit, which included giving Cindy Lou her signed copy of John’s book that she had won in my contest.

Following that, we went back outside to Yoda’s grave site, and placed the beautiful tombstone between the flying pig and The Eternal Squirrel. Then we took pictures, and yes—I did tear up.

After that, we went over to the Lodge to see Kinky. Kinky visited with everyone, and then he suggested that Josh shoot a game of pool with the Medina Bulldog, so he could make some phone calls. Josh didn’t have a nickname, so I quickly gave him one—the Spring Chicken!

When the game started, Cindy Lou and I went outside, so I could show her the ‘Friedman Family Bone Orchard.’ Cindy Lou was impressed with the little cemetery, and she took pictures of it. Then Kinky came outside to visit with us, and to throw a few balls for Mr. Magoo to retrieve.

When the Medina Bulldog and the Spring Chicken came outside—the game was over—the Medina Bulldog had lost! And, Kinky relentlessly teased Tony about it.

Before leaving, Mr. Magoo, found one of his chewgars in the yard, that ‘Erb and Karen had given to him on their January visit! Gooie began running around the yard with the big chewgar sticking out of his mouth! He looked like he was smoking one of Kinky’s cigars! It was hilarious!

We then returned back to the rescue ranch and had a great visit, and hated to see Cindy Lou and her crew leave!

Note: Cindy Lou’s latest book, ‘Out of A Texas Mist’ will be coming out soon, and you can check it out at: cindylouruffino. com

Today, we finally received some welcomed rain! When I woke up this morning at 8:00—it was pouring outside! And, I for the second day in a row, had overslept, again! I am having a lot of trouble—adjusting to the new time change, and I plan to use the alarm clock for tomorrow or else move to Arizona tonight.

Around ten o’clock this morning, which use to be 9:00 a few days ago, I drove over to visit with Kinky. During our visit, I realized that today was Tony’s and my anniversary. Nine years ago, Tony and I said our ‘Do’s’ at my ranch over in Utopia, with all of our dogs, cats, and rescued dogs—as our witnesses! Gosh, time has flown.

When Tony and John had finished with the dogs, they came inside the trailer. “Tony, do you know what today is?” I asked.

Tony looked at his watch and thought for a few seconds, “Our anniversary?” Tony asked, wearing a sheepish smile.

“Yep,” I answered, and then we broke out laughing!

Tony took me out for lunch today, to celebrate, and then we went to Home Depot to buy dirt for his heirloom, organic garden! Happy Anniversary, Tony! I love you!

P.S. Ann K. won a copy of John's book and I mailed it out last week—Priority Mail. Today, her package was returned to me for postage! Yes, I had forgotten to put the stamps on it! I remailed it today with postage, and I'm blaming the flu!
