Our Ton of Fun!
Yesterday, after going to Copies Plus to pick up more of Tony’s postcards, and to also pick up the three sets of postcards, that I had secretly made up for Kinky, as a surprise—we went to Wolfmueller’s to show them off.
Jon, Mary Jo and John Kemmerly, were sitting near the counter visiting—when we walked in. They loved the Kinky postcards! Then Jon said, “Tony, your postcards are selling like hot cakes!” He also suggested to Tony, to make up some postcards of his Hummingbird and flower pictures, because he thought they would be great sellers, too.
So, when we arrived back at the rescue ranch, I went over to the Lodge to give Kinky his postcards, while Tony busily e-mailed more of his pictures to Trish, over at Copies Plus, to make up more postcards.
Kinky loved his postcards, which made me happy! During our visit, I found out, that Kinky’s new book, ‘What Would Kinky Do? or ‘How to Unscrew a Screwed Up World’ is being released in about a week! And, he is also going to be on Imus—tomorrow morning, and on the O’Reilly Factor—Monday evening!
This morning at 7:45, I will be doing ‘The Harley Show’ with Harley Belew, on The Rose 104.9, to discuss the rescue ranch, and Harley’s Pet of the Week—Ms. Pepper! She was rescued from the Kerrville Pound, got adopted, and then came back to us, because she was weight challenged, and that is why we call her "Our Ton of Fun!” Ms. Pepper is a great dog and is approximately 3-4 years old and she is definitely—worth her weight in gold!

Now This Is Great!
Today, I received a cute note, accompanied with a check for the rescue ranch, from my good friend Karen Cares—up in Massachusetts! She and her husband, Herb came down to visit us on January 28th, the day after Herb’s birthday and we had a blast, and we now count them as good friends. I want to share her kind note with y’all. She’s too sweet. Karen wrote:

Dear Nancy,
Hi to you and Tony. I have to share this little story with you. My friend Judy was listening to Imus on her way to work, a month or so ago and he was talking to Kinky on the phone. While talking to him, another one of his phones was ringing so Imus told Kinky to answer the phone and it was you calling him. Judy was so excited because she knows you from hearing how great you are from Herb and I.
Herb and I enjoy seeing Kinky on O’Reilly every Monday night.
Little Rubeun has the Mange. I’m giving him Ivomec. He has to take it for a month. Hugs and kisses to “Miss Bunny” Love, Karen”
Karen’s words made me laugh when I remembered that Imus show, but I’m not so sure about being great, in fact, I can prove that I’m not great—and here’s the proof!
After reading Karen’s card, I asked Tony to please read it, and he laughed out loud when he got to the part about me being great! And, today, when I talked to Kinky on the phone, and told him about Karen’s note, he laughed, too when I mentioned the word—great and so did I!
P.S. Karen, you are so nice and thank you for making me laugh. I’m never going to live down that Imus show—it was pretty funny. And, I want to let you know that I am going to frame your card and hang it in front of my bathroom mirror—to cover it, because the mirror scares me and your great note will make me laugh—first thing in the morning and all day long! Its great and I love it! Thank you. Have a great day! : ))
P.S.S. Judy, your friend Karen is great, and we love her and Herb! They’re GREAT!

Imus In The Morning!
This morning I went over to have coffee with Kinky, and to discuss some rescue ranch business. We had our business meeting in his kitchen and when it was over—we went outside to the Friedman Family Bone Orchard for a visit.
Near the end of our visit, Kinky told me that he was going to be on Imus at 7:30 tomorrow morning. I think he told me that, so I wouldn’t call him during his telephone interview, like I did the last time. But, he did ask me to please give him a wake up call around 6:30 tomorrow morning. Then Kinky told me a funny story about last night, that made me laugh out loud!
He told me that last night he couldn’t sleep, so he stayed up until two-thirty, and finally decided to go to bed and try to sleep. When he crawled into his bed, the covers were all twisted up—thanks to Gooie—who tries to bury his chewgars and toys under the sheets and blankets.
When Kinky put his head down on the pillow, something alive started moving rapidly near his face! Kinky told me that it nearly scared him to death, because he was sure that it was a snake! So, he jumped out of his bed as fast as he could. He then flipped on the lights, so he could get his shotgun, but fortunately, there was no need for one—thank goodness!
“Kinky,” I said. “What in the world was it? A squirrel, a opossum?”
“No Nance,” Kinky said. “It was Brownie, or should I say it was actually Brownie’s tail. He was tangled up between the sheets, and when I layed down, he started wagging his tail real fast. So, thanks to Mr. B., I didn’t fall to sleep until after four thirty, and I am dragging this morning.”
P.S. Tony and I want to thank everyone for their kind words about Blue’s passing. It meant a lot to us.

Sitting Here In Limbo!

Tuesday morning, at 4:32, Kinky called the rescue ranch and left this message. “Cousin Nancy, Tony! I just woke up and if y’all are up—give me a call or come on over and drink some coffee with me. I can’t sleep.”
Tony didn’t hear the call, because he was in the shower and I was sound asleep. When I woke up at 6:00, I dressed, fed the dogs, made some coffee on the expresso machine, that I still don’t know how to use, and then started a load of laundry. Then I noticed the light flashing on the answering machine. I listened to Kinky’s message and then I called him.
Kinky’s phone rang and rang and rang and his machine never kicked in, so I hung up. I poured a cup of coffee and then I called Kinky again—second verse same as the first—no Kinky. I then switched on my salt lamp, and then turned on my iPod—Willie Nelson was singing, “I’m Sitting Here in Limbo.”
Third time’s the charm I thought, as I redialed Kinky’s phone number. His phone rang five times and then Kinky picked up the phone, “Hello? Who is this?”
“Hi Kinky, it’s me,” I said.
“Nance, I’m doing Imus right now,” Kinky said with a laugh.
“Oh my gosh! I’m sorry. Bye,” I said, before hanging up. I then turned on the television, paused the iPod—leaving Willie in limbo, and pressed the Imus channel! Imus and Kinky were laughing and so was his crew.
Ten minutes later, Kinky phoned me. “Nance, the show was hilarious! Come on over and have a cup of coffee with me. Imus is going to call me back in about ten minutes.”
I went over to Kinky’s Lodge. Kinky came out the door to greet me and he was still laughing about the Imus show. “I am really sorry, for calling you during the Imus show,” I said. “I didn’t know that you were doing his show this morning.”
“Nance it was hilarious,” Kinky said. “When you started calling me, I made the remark to Imus, ‘what kind of a crazy nut is calling me at 6:30 in the morning?’ I then accused Imus of playing an April Fool’s joke on me—and he denied it. Then you called again, and everyone started laughing and I told Imus that maybe I should take the call, but I didn’t. Then, the third time that you called, I told Imus I had to find out who in the world was calling me and I put him on hold.”
“You’re kidding me, Kink,” I said.
“When I got back to Imus, he asked me who had called and I told him, ‘Cousin Nancy.’ And then Imus asked me how you were doing, and I said, fine. It was really very funny, Nance.”
We both laughed. “Well,” I teased. “At least I don’t go calling people at 4:32 in the morning to come over to drink coffee—now that’s a real nut case, if you ask me.”

Can You Hear Me Now?

Today, began with me giving Kinky a wake up call, so he could do an early interview. I woke him up, as I always do, by calling his dogs, aka The Friedmans, names, one by one, which causes them to jump off of his bed—barking nonstop! Before calling the last name, Kinky answered the phone. “Okay, I’m up, Nance—thanks,” Kinky said. “Give me a few minutes, and then come on over and drink some coffee with me.”
Fifteen minutes later, Kinky and I were drinking coffee, in the Lodge, and watching Imus on the television, until it was time for his interview.
I returned to the trailer, and cooked Tony and me breakfast. After our meal, Tony went outside to work, and after cleaning up the kitchen, I sat down, and started stuffing envelopes.
John arrived on time, as usual, but this morning he showed up with Martha Stewart! I knew Martha was coming in this morning, and I couldn’t wait to go meet her, but the phone was ringing off of the wall, so it took me a while to get outside!
When I finally made it outside, I knew I wasn’t going back inside for a while, because the day was so beautiful—sunshine, no clouds, and sixty-five degrees—my kind of weather! When I arrived at Martha’s pen, the little beagle was still eating breakfast, so I decided to take Mama, our sweet, three-legged, Pit Bull, for a walk.
When I walked into Mama’s pen—she knew what was fixin’ to happen, and she couldn’t wait for me to put a leash on her. As soon as she and I had become one, we took off for our walk. Once outside the rescue ranch, we took a right, and headed west, on the caliche road.
Mama walked beside me, as we slowly descended the steep hill, down to Wallace Creek. When we arrived at the creek, Mama chose not to go swimming, instead she opted to sit on the bank beside me—watching the minnows, for fifteen minutes or so. After she had lost interest with the tiny fish, we went back to the road and headed westward, again. We climbed up another steep dirt road, which led us to a huge pasture, full of trees and wildlife.
We started walking north into the tall grassy meadow, but after walking about a hundred feet, Mama stopped dead in her tracks, and refused to walk any further with me! I thought her behavior was weird, because she has never done that on our walks, in the past.
The hair went up on the back of my neck, but I wasn’t sure if it was from the wind, or because something was wrong. I didn’t know what to do! Mama was too heavy for me to carry, and I wouldn’t tie her to a tree to go get help. I begged Mama to please come with me, one more time, but she refused to budge. Then suddenly, the thought of a mountain lion popped into my head! Now, I was scared.
I petted Mama on her back, to reassure her, and then I asked her to please walk back to the rescue ranch with me. Her ears went flat, she tried to take a step, but then pulled her leg back. She couldn’t do it—she was in pain!
Since, I hadn’t heard the scream of a mountain lion, I studied the situation, and came to the conclusion that Mama was in pain—due to arthritis! I felt horrible. I wondered how Tony, John, Ben or I hadn’t noticed her arthritic condition before. Poor girl. I felt terrible.
After apologizing to Mama for walking her arthritic body on a walk-about on the ranch, I figured the only thing left for me to do was to holler for Tony to help us, but because I was so far away from the rescue ranch, and the wind was blowing, I wasn’t sure he would hear me.
“Tony!” I yelled. “Tony!”
I could hear a few of our rescued dogs bark back, but that was all. “Tony!” I hollered as loud as I could. Then I heard more of our dogs bark back. “Tony!” All of the dogs began barking back at me. Then I heard Kermit’s engine crank up!
John had heard me, and immediately jumped into Kermit, our four-wheeler, and drove over to where Tony was working. “Tony!” John said, with excitement in his voice. “Nancy’s in trouble! I just heard her scream—Tony!”
Tony jumped into Kermit, and the two of them left the rescue ranch in search of me! I heard Kermit nearing, and then it headed off in another direction. A few minutes later, I could hear Kermit coming in our direction—and then their was silence! Tony had cut the engine off.
“Tony!” I yelled, hoping to give him direction to where we were at. Fortunately, it worked, because I heard Kermit’s engine start up, and within a minute—Tony and John had found us! We were rescued!
When the guys drove up, I could tell from the expressions on their faces, that they were glad to find me and Mama, but questioning why I had hollered, because we didn’t seem hurt or in danger.
“Are you okay, Nance?” Tony asked.
“I am fine,” I answered. “I hollered because Mama has arthritis! And she refused to walk any further! She was walking just fine until we got off of the road. Please take her back to the ranch with y’all. I will walk back, I need the exercise.”
Tony picked Mama up, put her between him and John, and off the threesome went.
When I arrived back at the ranch, I was glad to see Mama back in her pen—happily chewing on one of her bones. Then I walked down to the barn and found Tony and John. “I just saw Mama,” I said, to them. “She seems to be fine now, but I think we should take her to the vet to be checked for arthritis. What do y’all think?”
John and Tony looked at each other, and then they started laughing! “What’s so funny?” I asked.
“Nance, Mama doesn’t have arthritis—her feet were full of stickers!” Tony said. “That field that you walked Mama into is full of stickers right now, because of the freeze we just had. When we got back here, John and I pulled out—over a dozen stickers from her three paws. She’s fine now, and no, she doesn’t need to go see a vet.”
“Thank goodness,” I said. “I can’t believe it was stickers? I really thought she had arthritis. I promise, the next time I take a dog walking...”
“John and I are going to make you take a walkie-talkie—with you,” Tony said.
“And, bread crumbs, too!” John said, with a laugh.
