Episode 36: Our Little Secret! or Cold Turkey!

Please Note: If you would rather listen to Cousin Nancy's podcast, please click here or click on The Cousin Nancy Show podcast on the sidebar 👉

Today I did a short podcast about our great Thanksgiving Day dinner and then I finished it off with a few corny jokes about Thanksgiving. And I will try to tell y'all our story and put-it-on-a- bumper sticker for you. So here we go.

Recently our dear friends and neighbors over at the Texas Hill Country Resort, which is now under new ownership and management, had invited us to join them for their 1st Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. So, I decided to bring  my Cousin Nancy's Grape Salad that is so delicious and easy to make.

Well, to be honest with y'all, this grape salad recipe was actually Sandy's recipe that I stole from her and made it mine. Anyway, it's no big deal, because I steal all of my friends and family's recipes and they all know it. Anyway, here is this simple mouth-watering recipe that everyone loves.

A few days ago, Tony and I went to the little H.E.B. in Kerrville, so I could pick up the ingredients, to make this delicious grape salad.

So yesterday morning I gathered the ingredients for Cousin Nancy's Grape Salad and it only took me about 20 minutes!

Anyway, before I poured this creamy mixture into a small container for us to eat later at home, and then I poured the rest of the salad into a disposable, squared-foil-pan. Then I tasted it and it was OK.

But it just wasn't as delicious as it should be, so I figured I should have bought red, seedless grapes too instead of only using green grapes this time. (And please note: I would have purchased some red grapes too, but they were just too darn expensive.)

When Tony and I arrived at the Texas Hill Country Resort, Karen their super-friendly new manager greeted us outside, before we walked into the Rec Hall to join the party.

Omg! When Tony and I walked inside the building there had to be about 60 or more friendly faces, and rows and rows and rows of chairs and tables set with plates, and there was so much food prepared, there was only one spot left for me to squeeze-in my green-grape's-only salad.

To say the least, all of the food was totally delicious and there was so much of it almost everyone went back for seconds. Seriously, it was one awesome Thanksgiving Dinner feast.

Tone and I enjoyed eating with our friends Ricky and her husband Royce, and we also enjoyed visiting with Becky & John and many other friends.

We had so much fun after our fabulous dinner visiting with friends we were almost the last ones to leave the building. And after saying our goodbyes, as we were leaving to go home, Tony asked me if I wanted to take our salad home, but I didn't want to, because it just didn't taste right.

Later that night while we were watching the Cowboys defeat New York I went to the kitchen to get another glass of my cheap, boxed, Franzia Chillable Red Wine and I glanced over at the counter and I saw this!

I laughed out loud, and then I said, "Tony! Look at what I forgot to put into the salad today. No wonder it didn't taste right." And he and I began to laugh. Then I said, "And you and I are not going to tell anyone about this. Okay? It'll be our little secret."

So yesterday morning after my first cup of coffee, I opened-up the jar of marshmallow creme and added some of it to our grape salad. And it was totally delicious!

Now it is Make Me Laugh Time!

What’s the best way to fix a broken pumpkin?  Use a pumpkin patch.

Why did the cranberry blush?   It saw the turkey dressing.

Knock, knock! Who's there? Norma Lee. Norma Lee who? Norma Lee I don't eat this much.

If Pilgrims traveled on the Mayflower, what do college students travel on? Scholar ships.

What’s a pilgrim’s favorite dance?  The turkey trot.

What do you call rain on Turkey Day?  Fowl weather.

What's something usually insulting, but not on Thanksgiving? A family member giving you the bird.

What do sweet potatoes wear to bed?  Yammies.

What do you call a sad cranberry?  A blue berry.

What did the turkey say to the computer? Google, google, google!

Wait a second. Tony has just asked me to please stop telling y'all Thanksgiving jokes and he knows that I can’t quit cold turkey!

Well, folks, I hope that everyone enjoyed a Happy Thanksgiving too and I do want to thank everyone at the Texas Hill Country Resort for a wonderful Thanksgiving Day dinner that will never be forgotten.

And I especially want to apologize to those who ate Sandy's Grape Salad Thursday at the dinner, because mine is so much better with marshmallow creme.

Y'all take care and keep on laughing!

Happy New Year And Peace On Earth!

Our holiday season was filled with love, fun and having too much for me to do, because it is my busiest time of the year for me, at the rescue ranch. There are so many great things for me to blog about our wonderful holiday season I don't know where to start.

I do apologize for not blogging much this past month and not keeping y'all up to date on things going on, at our rescue ranch, but I was too tired with all of the activities. So, I am going to skip it and just start with a clean slate for 2017. But, I am proud to report that Kinky and I are still walking daily, since I blogged about us vowing to do it.

Today has been great. This morning both Tony and I overslept, but that was actually good, because we both needed to recharge ourselves and it has worked.

I've spent most of the morning, thinking hard about my New Year's resolutions and I am still pretty much undecided, because they require a lot of will-power which right now is at an all-time low. So I plan to wait a few more days when things settle down here, at the rescue ranch.

It is now 1:30, in the afternoon and I am still in my pajamas and walking around in my converted, leather moccasins, that Aaron so kindly made for me, several weeks ago. And I will not go outside, because I have a bad case of cedar-fever, again.

I fear that my nose might fall off, because I've been sneezing non-stop. It seems  that if I'm not sneezing, I am coughing non-stop, because I've just packed my nose with more Vick's Vapor Rub, again. It's a no-win situation for people living, in the beautiful Texas Hill Country and we just have to deal with it.

Anyway, Tony and I are watching the Dallas Cowboys and Eagles game and the score right now is: Dallas 10 —Eagles 10 and y'all can guess which team we are pulling for.

It's 2:00 right now and the score is Dallas 13 — Eagles 10, so I've just decided to take a 45 minute break, from the football game and get in a little exercise. So, I'm fix'in to go walk 4 Fast Miles with Leslie Samson, so I can help get rid of some more of the remaining, dried-on glue, that remains on the bottom soles of my leather moccasins and also because I seriously need the exercise.

So, as I finish writing this I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and Peace On Earth.

Y'all take care and keep on laughing— even though the Eagles just scored another touchdown!

First, Second And Third Quarters!

Today has been a quiet day. This morning I only walked six miles and then Hazel came out of the closet  and we deep cleaned the trailer, the front porch and then we went into Outer Space. When she went into the closet I took a short, but sleepless nap with Mama, because she either kept trying to pet my face with her heavy front paws or hugging me too tight while making happy sounds.

I spent the first, second and third quarters of the Dallas Cowboys football game catching up with my e-mail and I am thrilled that the Cowboys are back. I am sick about Coach Wade Phillips being fired, because I met him while working for the TCU Football Office back in the late 70's when his father Bum was down in Houston, in his coaching heyday with Earl Campbell, who I also got to meet when he stepped out of a sauna in the TCU workout room, but I have already told you about that. Anyway, I hope the Cowboys win today.

Even though I had over sixty e-mails to respond to I especially enjoyed reading Cheryl & Walt's funny note, because it made me laugh out loud—I love these people. And Mari of the Nomads e-mails always make me laugh and smile, too. Thank y'all!

Mari is probably right now on her way to Kerrville with her friends to see the Flash Cadillac concert that I wish that I could have gone to, but couldn't, because I am night blind and will not drive in the dark, because it is too dangerous.

There are eight minutes left in the football game and New York almost made a touchdown! So, I am going to stop writing and watch the finish of this exciting game. Go Cowboys!

Y'all have a great evening!

Sick And Tired Of This!

Hi everyone! I am still sick, and getting real tired of this! Cough, cough, hopefully I will be better tomorrow, because Kinky called, and we have a V.I.P. coming out tomorrow, to visit Kinky, and us! Please wish me luck on getting well. Y'all have a great evening.

P.S. I cannot believe that the Dallas Cowboys played so poorly today. Maybe they are all sick with what I've got—I hope not.

Happy Birthday Nita!

I want to start out my blog, by wishing my favorite sister-in-law, Nita, Ronnie’s wife, a Happy Birthday! I called her earlier this evening, and sang her the Happy Birthday song—off key— and it made her laugh! “So, Nit (Neat),” I asked. “How does fifty-seven feel?”

“Not too good,” Nita replied, followed by a laugh. “I can’t believe that I am three years away from being sixty!”

“I know, me too! Remember when we had that birthday party for us, and I had made up those t-shirts that read, ‘28 How Sad!,’ and we wore them at the party at y’all’s house?”

Nita laughed. “Yes, Nance, I do. We thought we were old back then!” We laughed, again.

“Boy, were we ever wrong! That was twenty-eight years ago, Nita!” I said. “Can you believe it? I’ve doubled in age and size, and you’ve only doubled in age—now that’s truly depressing to me! Did you know that Mercury is in retrograde, too?”

“Figures,” Nita said. “What does that mean?”

“Not good. What are you doing for your birthday?” I asked.

“We did it Sunday, Nance. Callie bought me two tickets to the Dallas Cowboy’s game. Ronnie and I drove up to Dallas yesterday and went to the game!”

“Wow! That’s great! Did we win or lose?”

“We lost and it’s your fault, too—because you didn’t watch the game! Ronnie, Nancy didn’t watch the game!” Nita teased. We then started laughing, again.

“Cheer up, Nita,” I said. “Just think, in a couple of weeks, it will be my turn, to turn fifty-seven! I think we should have a party for us! I will make us some new t-shirts, that will say “I’m only 8 in Dog Years! Bite Me!”

Nita burst out laughing and so did I. Happy Birthday Nita! I love you! You’re the best!

Earlier today, Tony and I had to go to Kerrville. We decided to eat lunch at ‘Lightways,’ a health food restaurant that our friends, Pat G. and Pam M., had told us about and recommended. It is a vegetarian deli and juice bar on Water Street—next door to Franciscos on the corner.

Tony and I ordered their Special—organic salad, organic vegetable soup and organic zucchini quiche—it was delicious! Sylvia, the owner came over to our table, while we were waiting to be served, to show us a tray full of beautiful, fresh vegetables from their garden. She told us that she and her family have an organic garden and we would be eating their homegrown organic vegetables.

Please go there and check them out at: www.lightway.info/lightways.html

After lunch Tony and I went to see Sandy and Mary Jo at Wolfmueller’s Books. As always, there was much laughing. Then we ran a few errands and returned home.

When we got back to the rescue ranch, I had thirty-three new phone calls to return—four were from Kinky!

“Nance,” Kinky said. “I’ve got some great news to tell you about the calendar...”
