I Sorta Saw The Light, Again!

Tony had a great birthday, thanks to all of y'all's happy birthday wishes—thank you! He loved it!

Yesterday, Buttermilk took Tone and me to Kerrville, so I could treat him to lunch for his birthday, and then take him on a shopping spree at WalMart, to buy as many fishing lures as one hundred dollars could buy.

T. wanted to eat at Billy Genes for two reasons. They have good food, and they are real close to Wally World. Just as we pulled into the restaurant's parking lot, Buttermilk's air conditoning system stopped running.

A few minutes later, as Tony and I sipped our ice(d) teas, while trying to decide what we wanted to eat, the weirdest thing happened!

A tall, distinguished gray haired man walked into Billy Genes with a couple of friends. "Tone, don't look now, but Jesus just walked in," I whispered. Then I started laughing. Tony immediately turned his head to look, and then he started laughing, too!

The man, was dressed in white, wearing a red shawl, draped across his chest, and over his shoulders—and hippy sandals! He had long, white, wavy hair, and he sported a handlebar mustache. I thought Jesus was pretty good looking for his age, but I didn't tell Tony, because he was dealing with turning fifty-five, and trying to behave like a senior citizen would.

"Nance, I promise you, that is not Jesus," Tone said. "He's just a Roman emperor visiting Kerrville." Then our friendly waitress appeared at our booth, acting like it was no big deal that Jesus was here to eat one of their famous chicken fried steaks. We gave her our order, while Jesus went over and sat down at a table, with two of his flock.

I really wanted it to be Jesus, because I had a few questions that I wanted to ask him, but Tone was right—the gentleman wasn't Jesus. I knew this, because I've never seen a picture of Jesus with a handlebar mustache. Then a couple walked into the establishment and said, "We're here to meet with the vacation Bible school party. We're running late." Tony and I laughed.

As Tony and I discussed the Roman Empire, our good friends and dog walking volunteers, Jan and Todd, entered the restaurant! We waved at them, and invited them to join us for Tone's birthday lunch!

The four of us had much to talk about. Last week, they had gone to New Orleans, but they had to turn right around and come back—because their dishwasher had caught on fire, and if not for their good friend—their house would have burned down! They told us that they are still staying at a hotel, and hopefully can move back into their house in a couple of days. Then we talked about the dogs at the rescue ranch, etc. as we ate our meals. When we were nearly finished eating, Todd's eyes got big and he quit eating. The Roman emperor walked past our table, on his way to the men's room.

"I thought that I'd seen everything," Todd remarked. The four of us started laughing!

"We did, too," I said. "He's here with some vacation Bible school people. I thought he was Jesus!"

Before leaving, after paying our checks, I told Jan and Todd about Buttermilk's air conditioning system quitting on us. I asked them if they had their camera with them, so they could take a picture of Tony pounding on the cylinder with our rock tool. Unfortunately, they didn't. After handshakes and hugs we said our goodbyes and left the restaurant.

After Tony had rocked out with Buttermilk, he slammed the hood down, and got into the Explorer. "Nance, It is too hot outside. Let's go home. I'll get my fishing lures later." I was fine with that.

Everything was cool for about fifteen minutes, and then the air conditioner quit, just as Will Hoover began singing, my favorite song of his, "Jesus Don't Drive No Fastback Ford!"

Y'all have a great evening!

P.S. D & D at the B & B—Trails End Guest House sent me Part III of Beckham's tale! I will post it tomorrow. You'll love it!

A Financial Pleasure!

Continued from Monday's post—

When I walked inside Wolfmueller's Books, Sandy and Jon greeted me. They invited me to sit down and visit with them. It was a fun visit. We talked about my book, Kinky's book and the breakfast that I had just come from. About twenty minutes later, Kinky showed up.

I gave Kinky my chair, because I prefer standing, as much as I can, because I sit too much behind my computer. As the four of us visited, there was much laughter when Kinky and I talked about our morning breakfast with our friends. Then I saw the back door of the bookstore open, and a woman walked inside, followed by a little girl. "Sandy, someone just walked in the back door," I said.

"Who is it?" Sandy asked.

"I'm not sure, but she and a little girl are headed our direction." Then I recognized the woman. It was Kathleen Keen, Robert Earl's sweet wife, with their cute daughter!

"Hi, everybody," Kathleen said. "I want y'all to meet my daughter." We all said hello to her. "I just picked my daughter up from her summer violin camp."

"How old are you?" Kinky asked the sweet little girl.

"Nine," she answered.

"How long have you been playing the fiddle?" Kinky asked.

"Almost two years."

"Why don't you play something for everyone?" Kathleen asked. Her daughter put her violin case down on the table, and pulled out her fiddle and bow. "Tell us what song you are going to play for us." Kathleen said.

"Arkansas Traveler." Then she picked up her bow and began playing. Oh my gosh—she was awesome! She played like a professional, and she put smiles on all of our faces!

When the song ended, everyone clapped their hands! "That was lovely. You are one very talented young lady." Kinky said. "You are better than me. I have always admired people who can stand on a street corner, and play music or perform like you just did in front of a small crowd of people. I wish that I could do that, but I can't. I can sing on a stage in front of hundreds of people, but I can't do what you just did." She smiled.

"It's called busking," Kathleen said.

"Busking?" I asked. "I've never heard of that word before."

"Me neither," Sandy confessed, too. Then we talked about some famous busking musicians. Kinky told us about one in Hawaii, but unfortunately, I can't remember his name.

"I bet I could get you gigs!" Kinky said. "How about signing up with me, and I will make you a star?" She could tell that Kinky was teasing her, and she laughed. While we visited, Kathleen went to look at books.

A few minutes later, she returned with a copy of "The Christmas Pig" by Kinky, and Kathleen said, "Sandy, I want to buy this book for my daughter, and Kinky, I want you to sign it to her."

"What should I say?" Kinky asked.

"How about, 'please sign my contract or let's make this a financial pleasure,'" I quickly quipped. Kinky loved it and he burst our laughing! Then he signed her book, writing a funny version of what I had suggested.

We laughed and visited a bit longer, then Kathleen and her beautiful daughter left, and a few minutes later, Kinky and I jumped into Mr. Green Jeans and returned to the ranch.

Y'all have a great evening!

P.S. Tony had a great birthday, and thanks to everyone who wished him a happy birthday today!

Happy 55th Birthday Tony!

Today, Tony, the love of my life, is fifty-five years old! I love you, Tony!
Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Tony! Happy Birthday to You!

Good Night!

Yesterday and today were uneventful, except for the fun visits, yesterday by Carol Vail and Cindy Pickard. I spent most of the rest of my time working on my book, and I have accomplished much! Yeah!

Today I spent over seven hours on my book, and I am sorry to say, that I am truly exhausted and going to bed now. Thank y'all for being patient with me—it is nearly finished!

Y'all have a great evening! Good Night!

I Saw The Light, Again, And Again And Again!

Oh my gosh! Today has been incredibly great for me, even though my horoscope predicted just the opposite. This morning I overslept, which was not good. In fact, I never even heard my alarm clock go off, one hundred and ninety-three minutes earlier than usual.

I woke up around seven, surrounded in bed, by my dogs and our three-legged cat. Like me, none of them wanted to rise and shine, so I stayed in bed for five minutes counting my blessings, and enjoying their furry company. When I rose, it was more like I twinkled than shined.

After putting my best friends outside, I went to the phone and punched in Kinky's phone number and got his machine. "Kink! It's Nancy. I've overslept, and you need to get up now, if we are going to go do breakfast with our friends at nine! I'll call you back in a few minutes and if you don't answer the phone—then I'm coming over there to wake you up! Bye."

I first fed Mama and Abbie. While they were eating, I punched the redial button on the phone's receiver, and got Kinky's machine. "Wake up, Kinky! Brownie, Chumley, Gooie wake Kinky up!" I half-hollered into the phone, in hopes that the Friedmans would wake him up for me. "Okay, Kinky. I'll be over there in just a few minutes. Bye."

After letting Mamajello and Abbie out in the backyard, I filled the dishes for Hank, Toto, Thunder, and Little Girl, and Luck-a-Luck. As soon as they rushed inside the front door to eat, I put on my pink cowboy boots, grabbed my white K for gov cap, and was literally walking out the front door when the phone rang—it was Kinky. "Good morning, Nance. I'm up. I'll call you back in ten minutes, after I get some coffee in me." Click.

While Kinky was charging-up on caffeine, I quickly showered and then got dressed—then I called him and he answered on the first ring. "Good morning, Nance. I was just fixing to call you..." It was a short conversation. We decided that I would drive over to the Lodge, ride with Kinky, and we would leave the ranch at eight-thirty, so we could meet our friends for breakfast at nine.

At nine o'clock sharp, Kinky and I entered the diner, and found our three friends sitting at a table near the back of the room. After hugs and rehugs and handshakes, there was an immediate light show, compliments of Wilma's little green digital flash camera, as she excitedly snapped ten to thirty pictures of Kinky and me, as we sat down at the table to join them. I knew it was going to be a long breakfast, even though I loved these nice people, who were really big fans of ours.

Kinky and I sat next to each other—across the table from Fred, Wilma and Pebbles. Kinky and I ordered coffees. Normally, I only drink decaffeinated coffee, but this morning I knew I needed all of the help I could get, as Wilma continuously took non-stop pictures of us, causing me to go temporarily blind for a couple of minutes, by the flashing light that was less than two feet away from my face.

When our breakfasts were served, Wilma set aside her little green camera, so she could eat her omelet. As usual, at our bi-monthly breakfasts with them, the conversation was strange or should I say really weird. This morning, I felt like I was an actress, that wasn't going to get paid, starring in a really low budget movie—that thankfully would never air!

While Fred talked to Kinky about the Beatles' White Album, and Paul McCartney, Wilma stared dreamily at Kink, and she forgot to eat her breakfast! While Pebbles kept nodding her head up and down, and repeating over and over again, how much she loved Jimi Hendrix—followed by cupping her hands together, and praying for Jimi out loud. Then she would do it all over again.

Kinky handled it really well, and I tried to, even though I kept bursting out with laughter, which would then cause Kinky to start laughing, as Wilma flashed her camera at us, two feet away—non-stop!

I could just picture it, later today, as Wilma showed off her pictures of us, to her friends. "And, here's Kinky and Cousin Nancy sitting down. Here's one of them just about to sit down in their chairs. Here's one of Kinky blinking his eyes. And, here's a picture of Cousin Nancy swallowing her coffee. No, Cousin Nancy's eyes are not red. They are blue..."

An hour later, our breakfast ended with hugs, more hugs, and very hearty handshakes, out in the parking lot, with even more pictures being takin'. After we said goodbye to these really sweet, nice people, Kinky and I jumped into Mr. Green Jeans and drove away.

Kinky needed to go by Herring Printing to talk to Joe Herring about his upcoming self- published book, so I walked two blocks down the street, to Wolfmueller's Books, with hopes of visiting with Sandy and Jon.

Y'all have a great evening!

To Be Continued....(Sorry Mari! It's after ten o'clock, and trust me, I need my beauty sleep—if that is even possible for a fifty-seven year old woman.)

Always Carry A Big Rock!

This morning I nearly walked seven miles with Leslie, but because of my own, self imposed time issues, I stopped in my tracks and went and took a shower. And it's a good thing that I did, too.

With it being the first of the month time, I did paperwork almost all morning, writing thank you letters and paying the bills. Right after I had all of that business caught up, the phone rang—it was Cheryl. Cheryl called to give me an update on how Opie was doing, so far. I really enjoyed our conversation, and I learned that Opie loves sleeping on the cold tile floor, as much as the couch! He is also behaving himself and minding his manners, so he won't ever have to come back to the rescue ranch! "Like I said yesterday, Cheryl— Opie ain't no dummy," I said. Cheryl and I discussed my upcoming book, too, and she has offered to edit it for me! That is such great news, because she is an experienced, professional editor and a writer! When our fun conversation came to an end, I looked at the clock on the wall, and happily realized that I was fourteen minutes ahead of my time schedule for today. Then the phone rang—it was Kinky.

"Nance, can you come over to the Lodge? I want to discuss something with you."

"I can come over now, but I can only stay for about thirteen minutes."

"Why thirteen minutes?"

I told him about my tight time schedule for today, so I could get a lot of work done on my book. "Now, we're talking twelve minutes, Kinky," I said. We both started laughing! "I'm leaving now."

Ninety minutes later, I returned to the rescue ranch, wishing that I knew someone that had a time machine, that could take me back seventy-eight minutes. Then I realized that I was wasting time, so I decided that I should live in the moment.

One moment later, Tone walks into the 'big room,' and he is all smiles, and he says, "I'm starving, Nance. I want to take you to lunch in Kerrville. And, you get to pick the place!" Those were not exactly the words, that I wanted to hear, at that moment.

I looked at the clock on the stove, and mumbled, "Eighty-one. I've now lost eighty-one minutes." Fortunately, Tony didn't hear me, because he will be celebrating his fifty-fifth birthday on the 6th, and like it or not—he's getting hard of hearing, too. Not to waste anymore precious time, I said, "I'm ready. Let's go!"

We jumped into Buttermilk and Tony turned the ignition key. Buttermilk started right up, but the air conditioner didn't come on. Tony popped the hood, and then he looked over at me, "Will you bang on that cylinder, while I unload the feed, in the back seat, into the back of Trigger?" Of course, I didn't want to.

I smiled at Tone, and then I got out of the Explorer, to go find a big rock. I picked up a fairly large, off-white colored rock and then began pounding on the cylinder—to vent my frustration. "Eighty-three," I softly stated. "I've now lost eighty-three minutes."

"You can stop now. It's working!" Tony said, happily, as he climbed back into Buttermilk. I slammed the hood down, put my new handy rock tool on the back seat, and then I got into our old 1996, sometimes air conditioned, Eddie Bauer package, SUV. Then we took off for Kerrville.

One hundred and seven minutes later, we were back at the rescue ranch. I was so glad to be back home. And the good news is— we didn't have to use the big rock in Kerrville.

I have just set my alarm clock one hundred and ninety-three minutes earlier, than I usually get up, so I can make up for the lost time. As you know, I am not good in math, so I hope that I have calculated this right.

Y'all have a great evening

Old Timer Revisited!

This morning I took the day off from my walking routine, because I knew it was going to be a busy day for me, and there was much that I needed to take care of. Tony went to the Old Timer for the first time in three days! Tone has to be really sick, to not go there, in the mornings, to visit with his friends. So, in other words—T. is well and feeling great at last!

Linda T. came out this morning, and she helped Aaron dip our dogs, and take them for walks! Thank you Linda! Around ten-thirty, Kinky called me. "Nance, two very nice women are coming out to see me, and they want to see the rescue ranch. Their names are Patti and Cheryl and they just left Kerrville and they are headed this way. I'll call you when they get here..."

The front door opened. Tony stuck his head inside, and said, "Nance, Rosie and her family are here to adopt Little Skeeter." I grabbed the clipboard and went outside to greet Rosie and her sweet family. After hugs and handshakes, Rosie filled out Skeeter's adoption papers. When she signed off on the form, we took off for Little Skeet's pen. During our walk, Rosie and I had a nice visit.

Ten minutes later, Rosie and her family left with one very happy little dog, sitting in their back seat! As Tony and I waved goodbye to them, we waved hello to Kinky and his friends driving in! After Kinky introduced us to Cheryl and Patti, Kinky, Tone and I took them on a tour of the rescue ranch. When we arrived at Opie and Lulu's pen, Kinky told them Opie's story, about how he had gotten adopted to a really great family with kids, but was sadly returned to us, because the family had had their home foreclosed on in Austin. "This dog is an old soul," Kinky said. "Just look into his eyes." They looked and we're hooked! They wanted to adopt Opie! Kinky, Tony and I were thrilled, but not as much as Opie was! He had finally found his forever home!

I needed to go to the trailer, to fill out Opie's adoption form, so I invited everyone to go into Outer Space, while I took care of the paperwork. Cheryl and Patti loved the view we have from Outer Space and they visited with Tone and Kink while I was inside the trailer. Five minutes later, Patti signed on the dotted line and Opie had a home! We visited for a few more minutes, then we took off to get Opie.

Opie was so happy to get out of here, he jumped in their back seat, like he had been shot out of a cannon! It made all of us laugh! A few minutes later, Kinky left to go back to the Lodge, and then they left with one of the sweetest and greatest dogs on the planet!

At two-fifteen, Richard arrived to pick up the the three wannabe Lab pups and Ellen Degeneres. He was going up to Buchanan Dam, and he had volunteered to deliver the four pups to our good friends, Catherine and David Berry, at Happy Dog Adoptions! Linda and Aaron helped load the lucky puppies, who more than likely will find their forever homes within a week or so!

After Richard left with precious cargo, I returned to the trailer and started working on my book. While I was in my writing trance, I discovered later on, that Cheryl had called to tell me that Opie was fitting in nicely with their four other dogs, and he loved their couch and he had already turned into a couch potato! And, before taking Opie home, they had swung by Wolfmueller's Books and bought a hard copy of my book, and Cheryl said she wanted it signed, and would come out here for me to sign it! I loved it! The other call that I missed was from Catherine. She called around four-thirty to let us know that Audie Murphy, Burt Lancaster, Hank Williams, Sr. and Ellen Degeneres had arrived safely, and they were happily playing in their puppy pen! Those two messages put a big smile on my face!

Around four-thirty, my friend Cindy Pickard came out for a visit. We talked about her moving to New Mexico, the rescue ranch, my upcoming book and her upcoming documentary. At one point during our conversation, I started telling Cindy about Karen Cares and the beautiful necklaces that she has made for me. Cindy wanted to see them, so I went inside the trailer and got them. Cindy's jaw dropped when I showed them to her! She thought they were beautiful, too! Cindy loves turquoise, but her favorite one was the awesome turtle necklace. We had a great visit in Outer Space, then she needed to leave, and head back to her ranch in Vanderpool. I am going to miss Cindy so much, when she officially makes her move to New Mexico, in a few weeks!

Today has been a great day, and I hope that yours was too!

Y'all have a great evening!
